Photocatalytic degradation of ethylene in cold storage using the nanocomposite photocatalyst MIL101(Fe)-TiO2-rGO

The visible light photocatalytic degradation of ethylene using a polyvinyl alcohol film loaded with Ag2O-TiO2-Bi2WO6 heterojunction microspheres

Abstract In this paper, we demonstrated for the first time the growth of 3D networks of graphene nano-flakes across porous stainless steel substrates of micron sized metal fibres, and its anti-corrosion properties. The controlled formation of graphene-grade coatings in the form of single sheets to complex and homogeneously distributed 2–4 μm long nano-pillars is demonstrated by Scanning Electron Microscopy. The morphology and stability of these structures are shown to be particularly related to the temperature and feed gas flow rate during the growth. The number of layers across the graphene materials was calculated from the Raman spectra and is shown to range between 3 and more than 15 depending on the growth conditions and to be particularly related to the time and flow rate of the experiment. The presence of the graphene was shown to massively enhance the specific surface area of the material and to contribute to the increased corrosion resistance and electrical conductivity of the material without compromising the properties or structure of the native stainless steel materials. This new approach opens up a new route to the facile fabrication of advanced surface coatings with potential applications in developing new thermal exchangers, separation and bio-compatible materials.

Growth of nano-textured graphene coatings across highly porous stainless steel supports towards corr

Active packaging containing photocatalyst is generally used to solve the issues of loss and quality deterioration of fresh fruits. However, only ultraviolet (UV) light can activate these photo-catalysts in ethylene photo-degradation. To overcome this limitation, green synthesized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) that inhibits ethylene gas production under visible light has been developed. In this study, spent green tea was mixed with deionized water at various ratios ranging from liquid to solid to obtain spent green tea extract (ex-SGT) having different concentrations used for synthesis of AgNPs. The results indicated that a good distribution of particles with a bandgap energy of 2.17 eV which was in the visible region for ethylene photo-degradation was successfully obtained with the synthesized AgNPs-60 (ex-SGT at the ratio of 60:1). The coated paper possessed an antibacterial activity and decreased the ethylene concentration in mango’s packaging. Based on the finding in this work, it appears that the coated paper could have potential to be used for novel packaging of fruits to delay their ripening so that their freshness can be maintained.

Graphene (Gr) can significantly improve the mechanical properties of metal matrix materials. However, the reinforcing effect of Gr on stainless steel (SS) has rarely been investigated due to the difficulty in its uniform dispersion. In this study, 316L stainless steel was reinforced with copper-coated graphene (Gr-Cu/SS) through molecular level mixing, ball milling, and spark plasma sintering (SPS). The tensile strength and yield strength of Gr-Cu/SS have increased by 74.0% and 65.5%, respectively, with 0.2 wt% graphene added. The improvement on the tensile strength and yield strength of Gr-Cu/SS is attributed to the effective load transfer and the increase of relative density due to the addition of graphene. Moreover, the corrosion resistance of Gr-Cu/SS was improved, attributed to the low cathodic overvoltage of copper and the prevention of ionic transfer between stainless steel grains by graphene.
