Antioxidant activity of plant extracts containing phenolic compounds
Marja P Kähkönen,Anu Hopia,Heikki Vuorela,Jussi-Pekka Rauha,Kalevi Pihlaja,Tytti S. Kujala,Marina Heinonen +6 more
TL;DR: High activities were found in tree materials, especially in willow bark, spruce needles, pine bark and cork, and birch phloem, and in some medicinal plants including heather, bog-rosemary, willow herb, and meadowsweet and potato peel and beetroot peel extracts showed strong antioxidant effects.
Journal ArticleDOI
Antimicrobial effects of Finnish plant extracts containing flavonoids and other phenolic compounds
Jussi-Pekka Rauha,Susanna Remes,Marina Heinonen,Anu Hopia,Marja P Kähkönen,Tytti S. Kujala,Kalevi Pihlaja,Heikki Vuorela,Pia Vuorela +8 more
TL;DR: Flavone, quercetin and naringenin were effective in inhibiting the growth of the organisms and purple loosestrife was the most active plant extracts against gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus.
Journal ArticleDOI
Natural Products in the Process of Finding New Drug Candidates
Pia Vuorela,Maija Leinonen,Pekka Saikku,Päivi Tammela,Jussi-Pekka Rauha,Tero Wennberg,Heikki Vuorela +6 more
TL;DR: The detection of natural compounds active against C. pneumoniae is presented as an example and can be guided by epidemiologic studies facilitated with computer assisted HPLC microfractionation and microplate technology.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effect of eluent on the ionization efficiency of flavonoids by ion spray, atmospheric pressure chemical ionization, and atmospheric pressure photoionization mass spectrometry.
TL;DR: Results show that negative ion IS with an eluent system consisting of acidic ammonium acetate buffer provides the best conditions for detection of flavonoids in mass spectrometry mode, their LODs being between 0.8 and 13 microM for an injection volume of 20 microl.
Journal ArticleDOI
Isolation and identification of oligomeric procyanidins from Crataegus leaves and flowers.
Ulla Svedström,Heikki Vuorela,Risto Kostiainen,Jari Tuominen,Juha Kokkonen,Jussi-Pekka Rauha,Into Laakso,Raimo Hiltunen +7 more
TL;DR: Oligomeric procyanidins were isolated from the leaves and flowers of hawthorn for the first time, in addition to known procyAnidins including dimers B-2, B-4 and B-5, trimers C-1 and epicatechin-(4 beta-->6)-epicateschin-( 4 beta-->8)-epicatechin, and tetramer D-1.
