Journal ArticleDOI
Toxicological Effects of Lead and Zinc on the Antioxidant Enzyme Activities of Post Juvenile Clarias gariepinus
Joseph K. Saliu,K. A. Bawa-Allah +1 more
TL;DR: There is need for more research on the oxidative defense response of Clarias gariepinus to persistent levels of high concentrations of heavy metals, and comparison of existing field and laboratory studies is needed.
Journal ArticleDOI
Differential toxicities of anionic and nonionic surfactants in fish.
TL;DR: The results obtained from this study have shown that anionic surfactants are more toxic to fish compared to nonionic surfacts, there is a need for stricter regulations governing the use of this class of surfactant in cleaning agents.
Journal ArticleDOI
Accumulation and Anti-oxidant Enzymes as Biomarkers of Heavy Metal Exposure in Clarias gariepinus and Oreochromis niloticus
TL;DR: The biochemical studies showed that the in the level of reduced glutathione (GSH), and the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathion-s-transferase (GST) in the liver of fish species reduced significantly and the increase in thelevel of Malondialdehyde (MDA) in liver of the exposed fish species was not significant after the 30 days exposure period as compared to the control.
Journal ArticleDOI
Environmental monitoring of urban streams using a primary fish gill cell culture system (FIGCS)
Sabine Schnell,K. A. Bawa-Allah,Adebayo A. Otitoloju,Christer Hogstrand,Thomas H. Miller,Leon Barron,Nic Bury +6 more
TL;DR: The primary fish gill cell culture system (FIGCS) is an in vitro technique which has the potential to replace animals in whole effluent toxicity tests and the increase in the expression of genes encoding mta, cyp1a1 and cyp3a27 in FIGCS is indicative of the presence of biologically active pollutants.
Journal ArticleDOI
Heavy Metal Pollution Monitoring in Vulnerable Ecosystems: A Case Study of the Lagos Lagoon, Nigeria
TL;DR: Results show that concentration of most heavy metals analysed has reduced significantly in the past 2 decades, however, the concentration of Cadmium was found to have increased significantly over the same period.
