The motion of energetic charged particles inside a monocrystalline solid can be strongly influenced by channeling and blocking effects. The present article reviews the theory, the experimental studies, and some of the applications of these effects. The coverage of the published literature extends through June 1973.

Channeling and related effects in the motion of charged particles through crystals

An improved method for electrolytic colouration of alkali halide crystals is described. In this method a matrix-type, multipointed cathode is used to produce a homogeneous colour centre distribution in crystals. To obtain equal injection conditions for each cathode point an adjustable constant-current power supply is used, which has separate channels for controlling the current of each individual cathode point. With this method sufficiently low and homogeneous colour centre concentrations, e.g. applicable colour centre laser crystals, can be obtained.

A method for homogeneous electrolytic colouration of alkali halide crystals

The absorption levels in the F- and M-bands in KCl have been monitored during controlled high-intensity irradiation with 5 keV electrons at room temperature, and novel saturation effects have been observed. The F-centre concentration rises to a maximum of between 4 and 7 × 1019 cm−3 (depending on the dose rate) and then decays slowly to an equilibrium level. The M-band absorption rises steadily except for a “plateau” coinciding with the F-centre maximum. After irradiation F-to-M-centre conversion takes place, but this is reversed on re-irradiation. These effects can be explained using a model in which F-centres produced less than about 25 A apart aggregate spontaneously; in addition, M-centres appear to be split up into F-centres by the radiation itself. The relatively large amount of energy (45 keV) apparently expended in forming each vacancy suggests that there is also a high rate of recombination with interstitial defects during irradiation.



Absorptionsmessungen in den F- und M-Banden in KCl bei gesteuerter intensiver Bestrahlung mit 5-keV-Elektronen bei Zimmertemperatur zeigen ungewohnliche Sattigungserscheinungen. Die F-Zentrenkonzentration erreicht (je nach Bestrahlungsintensitat) ein Maximum von 4 bis 7 × 1019 cm−3 und sinkt dann langsam auf ein Gleichgewichtsniveau ab. Die M-Banden-Absorption zeigt einen kontinuierlichen Anstieg, abgesehen von einem Plateau, das mit dem Maximum der F-Zentrenkonzentration zusammenfallt. Nach der Bestrahlung findet eine Umwandlung der F-Zentren in M-Zentren statt, die jedoch bei erneuter Bestrahlung ruckgangig gemacht wird. Diese Erscheinungen konnen mit Hilfe eines Modells erklart werden, bei dem sich die in Abstanden von weniger als 25 A gebildeten F-Zentren von selbst zusammenschliesen; auserdem scheinen die M-Zentren durch die eigentliche Bestrahlung in F-Zentren aufgespalten zu werden. Die bei der Bildung jeder Lucke anscheinend auf-gewandte verhaltnismasig hohe Energiemenge (45 keV) last vermuten, das wahrend der Bestrahlung eine sehr schnell vor sich gehende Wiedervereinigung mit Zwischengitter-atomen stattfindet.

F‐Centre saturation phenomena in KCl during low‐energy electron irradiation

High resolution Brillouin spectroscopy was used to characterize the elastic stiffness properties of consolidated nano-crystalline yttrium oxide as well as of the related single-crystalline state. Defect enriched grain boundaries are discussed as sources for the extremely soft elastic properties of the nano-crystalline state.

The influence of lattice vacancies on electron channelling in NaCl crystals

Range-energy relation of electrons in a KCl crystal

A rotating cylindrical crystal of KCl was bombarded by 19 keV electrons, and the F-centre distribution observed as a function of the angle of rotation. Eight maxima were found corresponding to different angular positions of the crystal. The depth of coloration was measured along the and axes in KCl and KBr crystals. In both the crystals the magnitude of coloration was higher along axes than along axes, but the depth of coloration or the electron range had been found to be longer along the latter direction. The results are interpreted in terms of channeling effect.



Ein rotierender zylindrischer Kristall von KCl wurde mit 19 keV-Elektronen bombariert und die F-Zentrenverteilung als Funktion des Drehungswinkels beobachtet. Es wurden acht Maxima gefunden, die verschiedenen Winkellagen des Kristalls entsprechen. Die Tiefe der Verfarbung wurde langs der - und -Achsen in KCl-und KBr-Kristallen gemessen. In beiden Kristallen war die Starke der Verfarbung langs der -Achsen groser als langs der -Achsen es wurde jedoch gefunden, das die Tiefe der Verfarbung oder die Elektronenreichweite groser in der -Richtung war. Die Ergebnisse werden mit dem Channeling-Effekt interpretiert.
