Two complementary effects modify the GHz magnetization dynamics of nanoscale heterostructures of ferromagnetic and normal materials relative to those of the isolated magnetic constituents. On the one hand, a time-dependent ferromagnetic magnetization pumps a spin angular-momentum flow into adjacent materials and, on the other hand, spin angular momentum is transferred between ferromagnets by an applied bias, causing mutual torques on the magnetizations. These phenomena are manifestly nonlocal: they are governed by the entire spin-coherent region that is limited in size by spin-flip relaxation processes. This review presents recent progress in understanding the magnetization dynamics in ferromagnetic heterostructures from first principles, focusing on the role of spin pumping in layered structures. The main body of the theory is semiclassical and based on a mean-field Stoner or spin-density-functional picture, but quantum-size effects and the role of electron-electron correlations are also discussed. A growing number of experiments support the theoretical predictions. The formalism should be useful for understanding the physics and for engineering the characteristics of small devices such as magnetic random-access memory elements.

Nonlocal magnetization dynamics in ferromagnetic heterostructures

The body of research on (III,Mn)V diluted magnetic semiconductors initiated during the 1990's has concentrated on three major fronts: i) the microscopic origins and fundamental physics of the ferromagnetism that occurs in these systems, ii) the materials science of growth and defects and iii) the development of spintronic devices with new functionalities. This article reviews the current status of the field, concentrating on the first two, more mature research directions. From the fundamental point of view, (Ga,Mn)As and several other (III,Mn)V DMSs are now regarded as textbook examples of a rare class of robust ferromagnets with dilute magnetic moments coupled by delocalized charge carriers. Both local moments and itinerant holes are provided by Mn, which makes the systems particularly favorable for realizing this unusual ordered state. Advances in growth and post-growth treatment techniques have played a central role in the field, often pushing the limits of dilute Mn moment densities and the uniformity and purity of materials far beyond those allowed by equilibrium thermodynamics. In (III,Mn)V compounds, material quality and magnetic properties are intimately connected. In the review we focus on the theoretical understanding of the origins of ferromagnetism and basic structural, magnetic, magneto-transport, and magneto-optical characteristics of simple (III,Mn)V epilayers, with the main emphasis on (Ga,Mn)As. The conclusions we arrive at are based on an extensive literature covering results of complementary ab initio and effective Hamiltonian computational techniques, and on comparisons between theory and experiment.

Theory of ferromagnetic (III, Mn) V semiconductors

We present an extensive experimental and theoretical study of surface acoustic wave driven ferromagnetic resonance. In a first modeling approach based on the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation, we derive expressions for the magnetization dynamics upon magnetoelastic driving that are used to calculate the absorbed microwave power upon magnetic resonance as well as the spin-current density generated by the precessing magnetization in the vicinity of a ferromagnet/normal metal interface. In a second modeling approach, we deal with the backaction of the magnetization dynamics on the elastic wave by solving the elastic wave equation and the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation self-consistently, obtaining analytical solutions for the acoustic wave phase shift and attenuation. We compare both modeling approaches with the complex forward transmission of a LiNbO${}_{3}$/Ni surface acoustic wave hybrid device recorded experimentally as a function of the external magnetic field orientation and magnitude, rotating the field within three different planes and employing three different surface acoustic wave frequencies. We find quantitative agreement of the experimentally observed power absorption and surface acoustic wave phase shift with our modeling predictions using one set of parameters for all field configurations and frequencies.

Surface acoustic wave driven ferromagnetic resonance in nickel thin films: Theory and experiment

Microrods of the ferrosulfide minerals greigite (Fe3S4) and marcasite (FeS2) are selectively synthesized by an in situ magnetic-field-assisted hydrothermal route. Each complex microrod is composed of fine building blocks with different shapes. The unique magnetic properties of the microrods and electrical performance of a single microrod are studied. The results demonstrate that the magnetic properties of the ferrosulfide minerals are strongly related to their corresponding microstructures. The value of the low-temperature transition increases as the greigite component in the product decreases. The combination of small-molecule sulfur precursors and an applied magnetic field makes possible the selective synthesis of ferrosulfide minerals with different phases and distinct microstructures, underlining the fact that the magnetic field can be a useful tool as well as an independent parameter for the phase-selective synthesis and self-assembly of inorganic building blocks in solution chemistry.

Magnetic‐Field‐Induced Phase‐Selective Synthesis of Ferrosulfide Microrods by a Hydrothermal Process: Microstructure Control and Magnetic Properties

Depositing pre-formed gas-phase nanoparticles, whose properties can be widely varied, onto surfaces enables the production of films with designed properties. The films can be nanoporous or, if co-deposited with an atomic vapour, granular, allowing independent control over the size and volume fraction of the grains. This high degree of control over the nanostructure of the film enables the production of thin films with a wide variety of behaviour, and the technique is destined to make a significant contribution to the production of high-performance magnetic materials. Here we review the behaviour of magnetic nanoparticle assemblies on surfaces and in non-magnetic and magnetic matrices deposited from the gas phase at densities from the dilute limit to pure nanoparticle films with no matrix. At sufficiently low volume fractions (~1%), and temperatures well above their blocking temperature, nanoparticle assemblies in non-magnetic matrices show ideal superparamagnetism. At temperatures below the blocking temperature, the magnetization behaviour of both Fe and Co particles is consistent with a uniaxial intra-particle magnetic anisotropy and an anisotropy constant several times higher than the bulk magnetocrystalline value. At relatively low volume fractions (≥5%) the effect of inter-particle interactions becomes evident, and the magnetization behaviour becomes characteristic of agglomerates of nanoparticles exchange coupled to form magnetic grains larger than a single particle that interact with each other via dipolar forces. The evolution of the magnetic behaviour with volume fraction is predicted by a Monte-Carlo model that includes exchange and dipolar couplings. Above the percolation threshold the films become magnetically softer, and films of pure clusters have a magnetic ground state that obeys the predicted magnetization behaviour of a correlated super-spin glass characteristic of random anisotropy materials. Magnetic nanoparticles in non-magnetic matrices show giant magnetoresistance behaviour, and the magnetotransport in deposited nanoparticle films is reviewed. Assembling Fe nanoparticles in Co matrices and vice versa is a promising technique for producing magnetic materials with a saturation magnetization that exceeds the Slater–Pauling limit. Structural studies reveal that the particles' atomic structure is dependent on the matrix material, and it is possible to prepare Fe nanoparticles with an fcc structure and, unusually, Co particles with a bcc structure. We also look to the future and discuss applications for materials made from more complex bi-metallic and core–shell nanoparticles.

The behaviour of nanostructured magnetic materials produced by depositing gas-phase nanoparticles

We report ferromagnetic resonance experiments on Ga1−xMnxAs thin films. For the dc magnetic field perpendicular to the sample plane, we observe up to eight distinct resonances, which we attribute to spin wave modes. To account for the spacing of the resonances, we infer a linear gradient in the magnetic properties, which is ascribed to a linear variation of the uniaxial magnetic anisotropy with film thickness. Values of D=(1±0.4)×10−9 Oe cm2 for the spin stiffness and JMnMn≈1 meV for the exchange integral between Mn spins are obtained.
