Journal ArticleDOI

Luminescent chemosensors for pH, halide and hydroxide ions based onkinetically stable, macrocyclic europium–phenanthridiniumconjugates

TL;DR: The neutral europium complex as mentioned in this paper shows a pH-dependent luminescence enhancement of over 500, while in the N-methylated analogue the metal-based luminescence is selectively quenched by chloride and (above pH 10) by hydroxide anions.
Journal ArticleDOI

Experimental assessment of the efficacy of sensitised emission in water from a europium ion, following intramolecular excitation by a phenanthridinyl group

TL;DR: The overall quantum yields for phenanthridinium sensitised emission from a europium ion have been measured in H2O and D2O for a series of five structurally related, octadentate ligands in which the distance from the phenanthrinium chromophore to the Eu ion varies from 2.5 to ca.8.2 A.
Journal ArticleDOI

On the role of the counter-ion in defining water structure and dynamics: order, structure and dynamics in hydrophilic and hydrophobic gadolinium salt complexes

TL;DR: The crystal structures of the hydrated salts of [G.DOTAM]3+ and its more hydrophobic derivative [Gd.]3+, bearing 4 alpha-phenylethyl groups, are reported and compared and the measured relaxivity is determined purely by the outer sphere term.
Journal ArticleDOI

Structural analysis of nine-coordinate lanthanide complexes: steric control of the metal-water distance across the series.

TL;DR: The structures of 10 isomorphous lanthanide (Ln) complexes of a chiral DOTA tetra-amide ligand and of six reported isostructural complexes of DOTA [L(2)] revealed a similar trend, with the implications of the resultant destabilization of the ground state structure for the water interchange process discussed.
