Journal ArticleDOI
Gene organization of the liverwort Y chromosome reveals distinct sex chromosome evolution in a haploid system.
Katsuyuki T. Yamato,Kimitsune Ishizaki,Masaki Fujisawa,Sachiko Okada,Shigeki Nakayama,Mariko Fujishita,Hiroki Bando,Kohei Yodoya,Kiwako Hayashi,Tomoyuki Bando,Akiko Hasumi,Tomohisa Nishio,Ryoko Sakata,Masayuki Yamamoto,Arata Yamaki,Masataka Kajikawa,Takashi Yamano,Taku Nishide,Seung H. Choi,Yuu Shimizu-Ueda,Tsutomu Hanajiri,Megumi Sakaida,Kaoru Kono,Mizuki Takenaka,Shohei Yamaoka,Chiaki Kuriyama,Yoshito Kohzu,Hiroyuki Nishida,Axel Brennicke,Tadasu Shin-I,Yuji Kohara,Takayuki Kohchi,Hideya Fukuzawa,Kanji Ohyama +33 more
TL;DR: The findings indicate that the Y and X chromosomes share the same ancestral autosome and support the prediction that in a haploid organism essential genes on sex chromosomes are more likely to persist than in a diploid organism.
Journal ArticleDOI
The Y chromosome in the liverwort Marchantia polymorpha has accumulated unique repeat sequences harboring a male-specific gene.
Sachiko Okada,Takefumi Sone,Masaki Fujisawa,Shigeki Nakayama,Mizuki Takenaka,Kimitsune Ishizaki,Kaoru Kono,Yuu Shimizu-Ueda,Tsutomu Hanajiri,Katsuyuki T. Yamato,Hideya Fukuzawa,Axel Brennicke,Kanji Ohyama +12 more
TL;DR: The repetitive structure of the liverwort Y chromosome is reported through the analysis of male-specific P1-derived artificial chromosome (PAC) clones, pMM4G7 and pMM23-130F12, and a novel Y chromosome-specific gene family was found embedded among these repeat sequences.
Journal ArticleDOI
Construction of Male and Female PAC Genomic Libraries Suitable for Identification of Y-chromosome-specific Clones From the Liverwort, Marchantia Polymorpha
Sachiko Okada,Masaki Fujisawa,Takefumi Sone,Shigeki Nakayama,Rie Nishiyama,Mizuki Takenaka,Shohei Yamaoka,Megumi Sakaida,Kaoru Kono,Masayoshi Takahama,Katsuyuki T. Yamato,Hideya Fukuzawa,Axel Brennicke,Kanji Ohyama +13 more
TL;DR: The result shows that the Y chromosome contains unique sequences that are not present either on the X chromosome or any of the autosomes that offer an opportunity to identify key genes involved in the process of sex differentiation and this unique system of sex determination.
Journal ArticleDOI
Comparison of expressed sequence tags from male and female sexual organs of Marchantia polymorpha.
Rie Nishiyama,Katsuyuki T. Yamato,Kenji Miura,Megumi Sakaida,Sachiko Okada,Kaoru Kono,Masayoshi Takahama,Takefumi Sone,Mizuki Takenaka,Hideya Fukuzawa,Kanji Ohyama +10 more
TL;DR: Interestingly, one of the ESTs found only in male shows a significant similarity to the transformer-2 gene involved in sex determination in Drosophila, and several unique lectin ESTs were found that are not present in the male library.
