Journal ArticleDOI
Morbidity, mortality, and response to treatment by children in the United Kingdom and Ireland with perinatally acquired HIV infection during 1996-2006: planning for teenage and adult care.
Ali Judd,Katja Doerholt,Pat A Tookey,Mike Sharland,Andrew Riordan,Esse Menson,Vas Novelli,E. G. Hermione Lyall,Janet Masters,Gareth Tudor-Williams,Trinh Duong,D M Gibb,Collaborative Hiv Paediatric Study +12 more
TL;DR: Morbidity and mortality rates among HIV-infected children continue to decrease over time and transition pathways to adolescent and adult services and long-term observation are required to monitor the effects of prolonged exposure to both HIV and HAART.
Journal ArticleDOI
Response to highly active antiretroviral therapy varies with age: the UK and Ireland Collaborative HIV Paediatric Study.
TL;DR: Children respond immunologically to HAART irrespective of pre-HAART HIV-1 RNA or clinical status, however, immunological response is better in younger children and those with lowest CD4%, whereas younger children have poorer virological response, increasing the risk of resistance.
Journal ArticleDOI
Coronavirus disease 2019 (covid-19): a guide for UK GPs.
TL;DR: A practical guide for GPs and others working in UK primary care on when to suspect covid-19 and how to respond is offered.
Journal ArticleDOI
Is it safe to discontinue primary Pneumocystis jiroveci pneumonia prophylaxis in patients with virologically suppressed HIV infection and a CD4 cell count <200 cells/microL?
Amanda Mocroft,Peter Reiss,Ole Kirk,Cristina Mussini,Enrico Girardi,Philippe Morlat,Christoph Stephan,Stéphane De Wit,Katja Doerholt,Jade Ghosn,Heiner C. Bucher,Jens D Lundgren,Geneviève Chêne,José M. Miró,Hansjakob Furrer +14 more
TL;DR: Discontinuation of prophylaxis may be safe in patients with CD4 counts of 101-200 cells/microL and suppressed viral load, and the incidence of primary PcP among patients who had virologically suppressed HIV infection, were receiving cART, and who had CD4 cell counts >100 cells/ microL was low irrespective of proPHylaxis use.
Journal ArticleDOI
Differences in factors associated with initial growth, CD4, and viral load responses to ART in HIV-infected children in Kampala, Uganda, and the United Kingdom/Ireland.
Addy Kekitiinwa,Katherine J Lee,A. Sarah Walker,Albert Maganda,Katja Doerholt,Sabrina Bakeera Kitaka,Alice Asiimwe,Ali Judd,Philippa Musoke,Diana M. Gibb +9 more
TL;DR: Poorer CD4 recovery in more immunosuppressed Kampala children and blunted growth responses likely reflect higher background malnutrition and infection rates in Uganda, suggesting the need for earlier HIV diagnosis, nutritional support, cotrimoxazole prophylaxis, and ART.
