Precipitation pulses and carbon fluxes in semiarid and arid ecosystems

TL;DR: It is shown that pulse size regulates C balance by determining the temporal duration of activity for different components of the biota, and a greater understanding of the complexities of these eco-hydrologic systems may enhance the ability to describe the ecology of desert ecosystems and their sensitivity to global change.
Journal ArticleDOI

Water sources used by riparian trees varies among stream types on the San Pedro River, Arizona.

TL;DR: In this paper, the fraction of tree transpiration water derived from unsaturated soil zone and groundwater in a riparian forest was quantified for Populus fremontii, Salix gooddingii, and Prosopis velutina across a gradient of groundwater depth and streamflow regime on the San Pedro River in southeastern Arizona, US.
Journal ArticleDOI

Multi-scale temporal variation in water availability: Implications for vegetation dynamics in arid and semi-arid ecosystems

TL;DR: In this article, the authors illustrate the importance of variation in water availability to temporal variation in vegetation dynamics in arid and semi-arid ecosystems, and hypothesize that fine-scale pulses of precipitation interact with longer scale variation in climate and weather to generate temporal variations in plant community composition.
