We propose that aesthetic pleasure is a function of the perceiver’s processing dynamics: The more fluently perceivers can process an object, the more positive their aesthetic response. We review variables known to influence aesthetic judgments, such as figural goodness, figure–ground contrast, stimulus repetition, symmetry, and prototypicality, and trace their effects to changes in processing fluency. Other variables that influence processing fluency, like visual or semantic priming, similarly increase judgments of aesthetic pleasure. Our proposal provides an integrative framework for the study of aesthetic pleasure and sheds light on the interplay between early preferences versus cultural influences on taste, preferences for both prototypical and abstracted forms, and the relation between beauty and truth. In contrast to theories that trace aesthetic pleasure to objective stimulus features per se, we propose that beauty is grounded in the processing experiences of the perceiver, which are in part a function of stimulus properties.

During human evolutionary history, there were "trade-offs" between expending time and energy on child-rearing and mating, so both men and women evolved conditional mating strategies guided by cues signaling the circumstances. Many short-term matings might be successful for some men; others might try to find and keep a single mate, investing their effort in rearing her offspring. Recent evidence suggests that men with features signaling genetic benefits to offspring should be preferred by women as short-term mates, but there are trade-offs between a mate's genetic fitness and his willingness to help in child-rearing. It is these circumstances and the cues that signal them that underlie the variation in short- and long-term mating strategies between and within the sexes.

What makes a face attractive and why do we have the preferences we do? Emergence of preferences early in development and cross-cultural agreement on attractiveness challenge a long-held view that our preferences reflect arbitrary standards of beauty set by cultures. Averageness, symmetry, and sexual dimorphism are good candidates for biologically based standards of beauty. A critical review and meta-analyses indicate that all three are attractive in both male and female faces and across cultures. Theorists have proposed that face preferences may be adaptations for mate choice because attractive traits signal important aspects of mate quality, such as health. Others have argued that they may simply be by-products of the way brains process information. Although often presented as alternatives, I argue that both kinds of selection pressures may have shaped our perceptions of facial beauty.

Beautiful Faces Have Variable Reward Value: fMRI and Behavioral Evidence

Testosterone-dependent secondary sexual characteristics in males may signal immunological competence1 and are sexually selected for in several species2,3. In humans, oestrogen-dependent characteristics of the female body correlate with health and reproductive fitness and are found attractive4,5,6. Enhancing the sexual dimorphism of human faces should raise attractiveness by enhancing sex-hormone-related cues to youth and fertility in females5,7,8,9,10,11, and to dominance and immunocompetence in males5,12,13. Here we report the results of asking subjects to choose the most attractive faces from continua that enhanced or diminished differences between the average shape of female and male faces. As predicted, subjects preferred feminized to average shapes of a female face. This preference applied across UK and Japanese populations but was stronger for within-population judgements, which indicates that attractiveness cues are learned. Subjects preferred feminized to average or masculinized shapes of a male face. Enhancing masculine facial characteristics increased both perceived dominance and negative attributions (for example, coldness or dishonesty) relevant to relationships and paternal investment. These results indicate a selection pressure that limits sexual dimorphism and encourages neoteny in humans.

Caricaturing the distinctive shape of famous faces can produce an advantage in reactiontime paradigms but the role of distinctive colour and intensity information in recognition of facial identity has not previously been explored. A presentation-time paradigm was developed by which stimuli could be presented for a range of brief display periods. Subjects were required to identify photo-realistic colour representations of famous faces which either were veridical, were caricatured in colour space, or had enhanced colour saturation and intensity contrast (as contrast controls). Recognition accuracy was greater when viewing the caricatured stimuli than either the veridical images or the contrast controls. The removal of colour information to produce grey-scale images also decreased accuracy of face recognition. Presentation-time measures of the effects of manipulations in colour space on discrimination of famous faces.

Previous forays into the study of recognition have revealed an advantage for line-drawn and photographic shape caricatures of faces in reaction-time paradigms. When a presentation-time technique was used, photographs with enhanced colour intensity and saturation were also found to provide superior recognition accuracy to veridical images. This has provided strong evidence that distinctive information can produce a recognition advantage for famous faces in both colour and shape domains. Such a presentation-time paradigm allows the display of stimuli over a range of brief display periods. Using this paradigm, subjects recognised photorealistic target faces caricatured in shape with greater accuracy than veridical images, consistent with previous findings when reaction time was used as a measure. Subjects were also asked to identify the best likeness for individuals using photorealistic stimuli and an interactive paradigm with shape caricature, colour caricature, and contrast control varied by the user in real-time. The best likeness with shape manipulation was a slight anticaricature, while with colour-caricature and contrast-control images a mildly exaggerated image was selected as the best likeness. Thus, although images caricatured substantially in colour or shape (+40%) induce superior recognition compared to veridical images, such substantial exaggerations are not necessarily seen as best likenesses under prolonged exposure.
