We are on the cusp of a new era of connected autonomous vehicles with unprecedented user experiences, tremendously improved road safety and air quality, highly diverse transportation environments and use cases, and a plethora of advanced applications. Realizing this grand vision requires a significantly enhanced vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication network that should be extremely intelligent and capable of concurrently supporting hyperfast, ultrareliable, and low-latency massive information exchange. It is anticipated that the sixth-generation (6G) communication systems will fulfill these requirements of the next-generation V2X. In this article, we outline a series of key enabling technologies from a range of domains, such as new materials, algorithms, and system architectures. Aiming for truly intelligent transportation systems, we envision that machine learning (ML) will play an instrumental role in advanced vehicular communication and networking. To this end, we provide an overview of the recent advances of ML in 6G vehicular networks. To stimulate future research in this area, we discuss the strength, open challenges, maturity, and enhancing areas of these technologies.

6G for Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) Communications: Enabling Technologies, Challenges, and Opportunities

As one of the most promising applications in future Internet of Things, Internet of Vehicles (IoV) has been acknowledged as a fundamental technology for developing the Intelligent Transportation Systems in smart cities. With the emergence of the sixth generation (6G) communications technologies, massive network infrastructures will be densely deployed and the number of network nodes will increase exponentially, leading to extremely high energy consumption. There has been an upsurge of interest to develop the green IoV towards sustainable vehicular communication and networking in the 6G era. However, as a special mobile ad-hoc network, the energy cost in an IoV system involves the communication and computation energy in addition to the fuel consumption and the electricity cost of moving vehicles. Moreover, the energy harvesting technology, which is likely to be adopted widely in 6G systems, will complicate the optimization of energy efficiency in the entire system. Current studies focus only on part of the energy issues in IoV systems without a comprehensive discussion of the state-of-the-art energy-efficient approaches and the influence of the development of 6G networks on green IoV. In this paper, we present the main considerations for green IoV from five different scenarios, including the communication, computation, traffic, Electric Vehicles (EVs), and energy harvesting management. The literature relevant to each of the scenarios is compared from the perspective of energy optimization (e.g., with respect to resource allocation, workload scheduling, routing design, traffic control, charging management, energy harvesting and sharing) and the related factors affecting energy efficiency (e.g., resource limitation, channel state, network topology, traffic condition). In addition, we introduce the potential challenges and the emerging technologies in 6G for developing green IoV systems. Finally, we discuss the research trends in designing energy-efficient IoV systems.

Vision and research directions of 6G technologies and applications

In this paper, we consider a hybrid reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) comprising of active and passive elements to aid an integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) system serving multiple users and targets. Active elements in a hybrid RIS include amplifiers and phase shifters, whereas passive elements include only phase shifters. We jointly design transmit beamformers and RIS coefficients, i.e., amplifier gains and phase shifts, to maximize the worst-case target illumination power while ensuring a desired signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio for communication links and constraining the RIS noise power due to the active elements. Since this design problem is not convex, we propose a solver based on alternating optimization to design the transmit beamformers and RIS coefficients. Through numerical simulations, we demonstrate that the performance of the proposed hybrid RIS assisted ISAC system is significantly better than that of passive RIS assisted ISAC systems as well as ISAC systems without RIS even when only a small fraction of the hybrid RIS contains active elements.

Beamforming in Hybrid RIS assisted Integrated Sensing and Communication Systems

6G will likely be the first generation of mobile communication that will feature tight integration of localization and sensing with communication functionalities. Among several worldwide initiatives, the Hexa-X flagship project stands out as it brings together 25 key players from adjacent industries and academia, and has among its explicit goals to research fundamentally new radio access technologies and high-resolution localization and sensing. Such features will not only enable novel use cases requiring extreme localization performance, but also provide a means to support and improve communication functionalities. This paper provides an overview of the Hexa-X vision alongside the envisioned use cases. To close the required performance gap of these use cases with respect to 5G, several technical enablers will be discussed, together with the associated research challenges for the coming years.

Integration of Communication and Sensing in 6G: a Joint Industrial and Academic Perspective

Among the key differentiators of 6G compared to 5G will be the increased emphasis on radio-based positioning and sensing. These will be utilized not only for conventional location-aware services and for enhancing communication performance but also to support new use case families with extreme performance requirements. This article presents a unified vision from stakeholders across the value chain in terms of both opportunities and challenges for 6G positioning and sensing as well as use cases, performance requirements, and gap analysis. Combined, this motivates the technical advances in 6G and guides system design.

Positioning and Sensing in 6G: Gaps, Challenges, and Opportunities

Having the Fifth Generation (5G) mobile communication system recently rolled out in many countries, the wireless community is now setting its eyes on the next era of Sixth Generation (6G). Inheriting from 5G its focus on industrial use cases, 6G is envisaged to become the infrastructural backbone of future intelligent industry. Especially, a combination of 6G and the emerging technologies of Digital Twins (DT) will give impetus to the next evolution of Industry 4.0 (I4.0) systems. This article provides a survey in the research area of 6G-empowered industrial DT system. With a novel vision of 6G industrial DT ecosystem, this survey discusses the ambitions and potential applications of industrial DT in the 6G era, and identifies the emerging challenges as well as the key enabling technologies. The introduced ecosystem is supposed to bridge the gaps between humans, machines, and the data infrastructure, and therewith enable numerous novel application scenarios.
