Broadband Microstrip Antennas

Utilization of electromagnetic band-gap (EBG) structures is becoming attractive in the electromagnetic and antenna community. In this paper, a mushroom-like EBG structure is analyzed using the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. Its band-gap feature of surface-wave suppression is demonstrated by exhibiting the near field distributions of the electromagnetic waves. The mutual coupling of microstrip antennas is parametrically investigated, including both the E and H coupling directions, different substrate thickness, and various dielectric constants. It is observed that the E-plane coupled microstrip antenna array on a thick and high permittivity substrate has a strong mutual coupling due to the pronounced surface waves. Therefore, an EBG structure is inserted between array elements to reduce the mutual coupling. This idea has been verified by both the FDTD simulations and experimental results. As a result, a significant 8 dB mutual coupling reduction is noticed from the measurements.

Massive MIMO Networks: Spectral, Energy, and Hardware Efficiency

Over the last three decades, a large number of evolutionary algorithms have been developed for solving multi-objective optimization problems. However, there lacks an upto-date and comprehensive software platform for researchers to properly benchmark existing algorithms and for practitioners to apply selected algorithms to solve their real-world problems. The demand of such a common tool becomes even more urgent, when the source code of many proposed algorithms has not been made publicly available. To address these issues, we have developed a MATLAB platform for evolutionary multi-objective optimization in this paper, called PlatEMO, which includes more than 50 multiobjective evolutionary algorithms and more than 100 multi-objective test problems, along with several widely used performance indicators. With a user-friendly graphical user interface, PlatEMO enables users to easily compare several evolutionary algorithms at one time and collect statistical results in Excel or LaTeX files. More importantly, PlatEMO is completely open source, such that users are able to develop new algorithms on the basis of it. This paper introduces the main features of PlatEMO and illustrates how to use it for performing comparative experiments, embedding new algorithms, creating new test problems, and developing performance indicators. PlatEMO: A MATLAB Platform for Evolutionary Multi-Objective Optimization [Educational Forum]

A novel wideband unidirectional antenna composed of a planar electric dipole and a shorted patch antenna is presented. The antenna is excited by a Γ-shaped strip feed line. A wide impedance bandwidth of 43.8% (SWR≤1.5) from the frequency of 1.85 to 2.89 GHz is achieved. Stable radiation pattern with low cross- polarization, low backlobe radiation, nearly identical E-and H-plane patterns and an antenna gain of ~8dBi is found across the entire operating bandwidth.

A New Wideband Unidirectional Antenna Element

The characteristics of a rectangular microstrip antenna with an L-shaped probe are investigated. A foam layer with a thickness of around 10% of the wavelength is used as the supporting substrate. An impedance bandwidth of 35% and an average gain of 7.5 dBi can be achieved. The radiation pattern is stable across the passband.

Broadband microstrip patch antenna

Experimental and simulation results are presented on the coaxially fed rectangular patch antenna with a U-shaped slot. Experimental results include impedance bandwidth, copolar- and crosspolar-pattern characteristics and gain measurements. Simulation results are obtained mainly through the development of a FDTD code. It is found that the U-slot patch on a foam substrate of about 0.08/spl lambda/ thick can be designed to attain 20-30% impedance as well as gain bandwidths without the need of parasitic patches on another layer or on the same layer. The far-field patterns have good copolar and crosspolar characteristics. By altering the patch width or feed position, the wideband characteristic can be changed into a dual-frequency characteristic. Simulation results are in good agreement with measurements.

Experimental and simulation studies of the coaxially fed U-slot rectangular patch antenna

The L-shaped probe is shown to be an attractive feed for the thick microstrip antenna (thickness around 10% of the operating wavelength). A parametric study on the rectangular patch antenna is presented. It is found that the antenna attains 36% impedance bandwidth (SWR/spl les/2) as well as gain bandwidth and about 7-dBi average gain. A two-element array fed by L-probes is also proposed. Experiments show that the array design can substantially suppress the cross polarization of the proposed antenna. Both the antennas have stable radiation patterns across the passband. Moreover, the measured resonant frequencies of the proposed antenna agree well with an existing formula and the L-probe does not have much effect on the resonant frequency.

Experimental study of a microstrip patch antenna with an L-shaped probe

A broad-band U-slot rectangular patch antenna printed on a microwave substrate is investigated. The dielectric constant of the substrate is 2.33. The antenna is fed by a coaxial probe. The characteristics of the U-slot patch antenna are analyzed by the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. Experimental results for the input impedance and radiation patterns are obtained and compared with numerical results. The maximum impedance bandwidth achieved is 27%, centered around 3.1 GHz, with good pattern characteristics.
