Molecular self-assembly is the spontaneous association of molecules under equilibrium conditions into stable, structurally well-defined aggregates joined by noncovalent bonds. Molecular self-assembly is ubiquitous in biological systems and underlies the formation of a wide variety of complex biological structures. Understanding self-assembly and the associated noncovalent interactions that connect complementary interacting molecular surfaces in biological aggregates is a central concern in structural biochemistry. Self-assembly is also emerging as a new strategy in chemical synthesis, with the potential of generating nonbiological structures with dimensions of 1 to 10(2) nanometers (with molecular weights of 10(4) to 10(10) daltons). Structures in the upper part of this range of sizes are presently inaccessible through chemical synthesis, and the ability to prepare them would open a route to structures comparable in size (and perhaps complementary in function) to those that can be prepared by microlithography and other techniques of microfabrication.

Molecular self-assembly and nanochemistry: A chemical strategy for the synthesis of nanostructures

Electrogenerated chemiluminescence (also called electrochemiluminescence and abbreviated ECL) is the process whereby species generated at electrodes undergo high-energy electron-transfer reactions to form excited states that emit light. The first detailed ECL studies were described by Hercules and Bard et al. in the mid-1960s, although reports concerning light emission during electrolysis date back to the 1920s by Harvey. After about 40 years study, ECL has now become a very powerful analytical technique and been widely used in the areas of, for example, immunoassay, food and water testing, and biowarfare agent detection. ECL has also been successfully exploited as a detector of flow injection analysis (FIA), high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), capillary electrophoresis, and micro total analysis (μTAS). Figure 1 illustrates a time line of various events in the development of ECL. A literature survey using SciFinder Scholar reveals that more than 2000 journal articles, book chapters, and patents on various topics of ECL have been published. The overall number of publications, as shown in Figure 2, has increased exponentially over the past 20 years, of which 40–50% were biorelated. Wujian Miao received his undergraduate diploma in chemistry from Nantong University (Nantong, China) in 1982, his M.Sc. degree in analytical chemistry from Zhongshan University (Guangzhou, China, with Jinyuan Mo) in 1991, and his Ph.D. degree in electrochemistry from Monash University (Melbourne, Australia, with Alan M. Bond) in 2000. He then served as a Research Scientist in CSIRO (Melbourne, Australia), followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Texas at Austin with Allen J. Bard in 2001. Since 2004 he has served as an assistant professor of chemistry at the University of Southern Mississippi.

Metal-organic and porous organic framework in electrocatalytic water splitting

This paper reports a new DNA chip printing method based on a master DNA chip. In our DNA nanoprinting, a microarray of covalently immobilized single-stranded DNA, a master-chip, is hybridized in mixture of single-stranded DNA molecules solution, which has all complementary sequence of the attached DNA on the master-chip and some acrylamide group at 5' end of DNA. Due to the sequence specific hybridization, hybridized DNA molecules are localized on the master-chip according to their sequences. To make print-chip, acrylamide group attached DNA make polymerization onto a new substrate plate. Polyacrylamide gel is formed between DNA and a printed chip plate. During the gel formation, the acrylamide group of hybridized DNA is copolymerized with acrylamide in solution. And then, the print-chip is detached from the master-chip with DNA incorporated polyacrylamide gel layer. As covalently attached DNA is remaining on the master-chip, which can be reused. Also using this technique, same copy of DNA microarrays can be fabricated repeatedly 10 times. A personalized DNA microarray, which can be generated with similar method, will be also discussed.

Electrochemiluminescence detection method for nucleic acid using intercalator and transition metal complex

The mobility and toxicity of Arsenite (As (III)) hinder its removal from aquatic environments, posing a serious threat to human health. Nanoparticles based on a stable CoFe-based metal-organic framework (MOF) were produced and investigated for their potential application as an adsorbent in the process of removing arsenate from an aqueous environment, which is a major health concern. The synthesized materials were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Particle size analyzer, and electron microscopy techniques. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) was used in order to carry out a comprehensive investigation of the As (III) elimination process. The synergistic effect between Co and Fe in the MOF enhances the arsenic removal efficiency to nearly 99% and enables a larger adsorption capacity. In addition, The adsorption efficiency was further investigated with respect to various parameters, including initial solution pH, adsorbent loading, co-existing ions, and contact time. This new CoxFe3−xO4 adsorbent has an impressive adsorption capability of 119.1 mg/g at neutral pH. The CoxFe3−xO4 adsorbent shows an efficient As(III) adsorption capacity compared with other adsorbents. The adsorption mechanism was found to involve metal-oxygen bonding, hydroxyl groups, and electrostatic interactions. Due to its superior adsorption capability, the CoxFe3−xO4 catalyst has the potential to be a useful material for the removal of arsenic from water.
