Journal ArticleDOI

Virulent strains of Toxoplasma gondii comprise a single clonal lineage

TL;DR: Analysis of 28 strains from a variety of hosts on five continents suggests that virulent strains of T. gondii originated from a single lineage which has remained genetically homogeneous despite being globally widespread, and despite the ability of this organism to reproduce sexually.
Journal ArticleDOI

Toxoplasma Invasion of Mammalian Cells Is Powered by the Actin Cytoskeleton of the Parasite

TL;DR: It is concluded that host cell invasion by Toxoplasma, and likely by related Apicomplexans, is actively powered by an actin-based contractile system in the parasite.
Journal ArticleDOI

Cytoskeleton of Apicomplexan Parasites

TL;DR: The unusual properties of actin and myosin in the Apicomplexa, the highly stereotyped microtubule populations in apicOMplexans, and a network of recently discovered novel intermediate filament-like elements in these parasites are discussed.
Journal ArticleDOI

Modulation of innate immunity by Toxoplasma gondii virulence effectors

TL;DR: Recent advances that illustrate how virulence factors disarm innate immunity and promote survival of the parasite are reviewed.
Journal ArticleDOI

Efficient Gene Disruption in Diverse Strains of Toxoplasma gondii Using CRISPR/CAS9

TL;DR: A new genetic system based on CRISPR/CAS9 is imported, which allows high efficiency of targeted gene disruption in natural isolates of T. gondii, allowing exploration of a much wider spectrum of biological diversity.
