An adaptive system for protecting a distribution network should determine and implement relay settings that are most appropriate for the prevailing state of the power system. This paper presents a technique for determining coordinated relay settings. The technique uses the Simplex two-phase method; Phase I determines whether the constraints selected for illustrating the conditionality between primary and back up relays are feasible, and Phase II finds the optimal relay settings. A looped distribution system, protected by directional overcurrent relays, was used for testing the technique. The tests were conducted in a laboratory environment; some results from those tests are reported in the paper.

An on-line relay coordination algorithm for adaptive protection using linear programming technique

The coordination of directional overcurrent relays (DOCR) is treated in this paper using particle swarm optimization (PSO), a recently proposed optimizer that utilizes the swarm behavior in searching for an optimum. PSO gained a lot of interest for its simplicity, robustness, and easy implementation. The problem of setting DOCR is a highly constrained optimization problem that has been stated and solved as a linear programming (LP) problem. To deal with such constraints a modification to the standard PSO algorithm is introduced. Three case studies are presented, and the results are compared to those of LP technique to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methodology.

A Modified Particle Swarm Optimizer for the Coordination of Directional Overcurrent Relays

Coordination of directional overcurrent relays in a multiloop subtransmission or distribution network is formulated as an optimization problem. In this paper, the coordination of directional overcurrent relays is formulated as a mixed-integer nonlinear programming problem and is then solved by a new seeker optimization technique. Based on the act of human searching, in the proposed seeker technique, the search direction and step length are determined in an adaptive way. The proposed method is implemented in three different test cases. The results are compared with previously proposed analytic and evolutionary approaches.

Coordination of Directional Overcurrent Relays Using Seeker Algorithm

This paper presents new explorations into the use of agent technology applied to protection coordination of power systems. The impact of distributed generators on protection coordination is firstly discussed. Then a coordination multi-agent system is proposed with the functions of the agents described. In the proposed system, communication plays an important role to provide more information for the relay coordination besides the relay settings. Communication simulation has been carried out on the Java agent development framework (JADE) platform. The information communication process shows that adaptive coordination can be achieved.

An Adaptive Multiagent Approach to Protection Relay Coordination With Distributed Generators in Industrial Power Distribution System

Considerations of weight factors and far-end faults in the directional overcurrent relay coordination problem formulation do not affect the optimal solution. This paper investigates this viewpoint and verifies that indeed by such an approach the optimality is not lost. But, this study reveals that in doing so, the coordination quality is sacrificed to some extent. It is also observed that if all remaining valid constraints (after relaxing few constraints based on the back-up coordination philosophy and strength of fault level generated) are considered and if the objective function is changed to running sum of all violating constraints, all valid considered constraints are satisfied. This study is done by simultaneously optimizing all settings in nonlinear environment by Sequential Quadratic Programming method using Matlab Toolbox. The results of the analysis on a sample 6-bus and IEEE 30-bus systems are presented in this paper.

A new nonlinear directional overcurrent relay coordination technique, and banes and boons of near-end faults based approach

The concept of functional dependency is applied to the problem of relay coordination in protection systems. An algorithm is developed for the identification of a minimal break point set (BPS) of relays of a protection topology. This algorithm is an improvement over existing algorithms in that it identifies a minimal BPS within a time period that is a polynomial function of the number of relays, while the earlier algorithms had exponential time behavior. In the case of large protection schemes, the saving in computation costs is considerable. An algorithm is developed for the selection of a relative sequence matrix; this algorithm also has polynomial time complexity. The functional dependency approach is seen to be more flexible and more powerful than the graph theoretic schemes, and holds out much promise for the development of efficient computer-aided design tools for the protection engineer. >

An application of functional dependencies to the topological analysis of protection schemes

The authors establish the relevance of Petri net modeling to protection studies. They illustrate how the different Petri net models capture the information that is of importance to both qualitative and quantitative evaluation of protection schemes. The marked Petri nets allow one to evaluate the qualitative performance measures of conservativeness, safeness, and properness. Time Petri nets are able to represent the timing parameters of protection schemes, and serve as a tool for the establishment of relationships between these parameters, in order that the coordination between primary and backup protection is ensured. An alternative means of representing timing information is the timed Petri net, which is useful in the computation of the cycle times of the operational cycles of protection schemes. Stochastic Petri nets adequately represent the stochastic nature of protection. Their advantage over simulation techniques as a means of computing the mean sojourn time and the steady-state probability of occupancy of each state of the protection scheme is demonstrated. >
