Journal ArticleDOI

The antiviral activity of sulfated polysaccharides against dengue virus is dependent on virus serotype and host cell

TL;DR: Variations in antiviral activity of the polysaccharides depending on the viral serotype and the host cell may be ascribed to differences in the virus-cell interaction leading to virus entry.
Journal ArticleDOI

Anti-herpes simplex virus activity of sulfated galactans from the red seaweeds Gymnogongrus griffithsiae and Cryptonemia crenulata.

TL;DR: A significant protection against a murine vaginal infection with HSV-2 was afforded by topical treatment with the sulfated galactans, and the mode of action of these compounds could be mainly ascribed to an inhibitory effect on virus adsorption.
Journal ArticleDOI

Interference in dengue virus adsorption and uncoating by carrageenans.

TL;DR: The dual sites of action of an HS-like molecule suggest that, at least in monkey kidney and human hepatic cells, the HS residues in the cell membrane appear to act as mediators for DENV-2 entry, an interesting alternative target for flavivirus therapy.
Journal ArticleDOI

Chemical structure and antiviral activity of carrageenans from Meristiella gelidium against herpes simplex and dengue virus

TL;DR: Chemical and spectroscopic methods showed that the major KCl-precipitated galactans from Meristiella gelidium (Solieriaceae) are iota/kappa/nu-hybrid carrageenans with the former one in higher proportion, with a value high enough to consider thisCarrageenan as a promising agent to be evaluated for the treatment of genital HSV-2 infections.
Journal ArticleDOI

Virucidal activity of essential oils from aromatic plants of San Luis, Argentina

TL;DR: Essential oils obtained from eight aromatic plants of San Luis Province, Argentina, were screened for virucidal activity against herpes simplex virus type 1, Junin virus (JUNV) and dengue virus type 2 (DEN‐2) and the most potent inhibition was observed with the essential oil of Lippia junelliana and Lippi turbinata against JUNV.
