To live, every being must put out a line, and in life these lines tangle with one another. This book is a study of the life of lines. Following on from Tim Ingold's groundbreaking work Lines: A Brief History, it offers a wholly original series of meditations on life, ground, weather, walking, imagination and what it means to be human.



In the first part, Ingold argues that a world of life is woven from knots, and not built from blocks as commonly thought. He shows how the principle of knotting underwrites both the way things join with one another, in walls, buildings and bodies, and the composition of the ground and the knowledge we find there. 


In the second part, Ingold argues that to study living lines, we must also study the weather. To complement a linealogy that asks what is common to walking, weaving, observing, singing, storytelling and writing, he develops a meteorology that seeks the common denominator of breath, time, mood, sound, memory, colour and the sky. This denominator is the atmosphere. 


In the third part, Ingold carries the line into the domain of human life. He shows that for life to continue, the things we do must be framed within the lives we undergo. In continually answering to one another, these lives enact a principle of correspondence that is fundamentally social. 


This compelling volume brings our thinking about the material world refreshingly back to life. While anchored in anthropology, the book ranges widely over an interdisciplinary terrain that includes philosophy, geography, sociology, art and architecture.

The Life of Lines

What would it mean to understand nationalism as an atmosphere? This article makes a theoretical contribution to cultural geographical works on ‘affective atmospheres’ as well as to critical approaches to the study of nationalism by addressing this question. It examines how nationalism operates affectively and atmospherically through a discussion of the event of the London 2012 Olympic Games and the ‘happy atmospheres’ of being together that circulated in the course of those Games. The key claim of the article is that addressing the nation’s affective, emotional and atmospheric resonances is critical for understanding how nationalism endures and, furthermore, how it appears especially difficult to critique. Beyond Night-Time Economy: Affective Atmospheres of the Urban Night

This paper argues for expanded listening in geography. Expanded listening addresses how bodies of all kinds, human and more-than-human, respond to sound. We show how listening can contribute to research on a wide range of topics, beyond enquiry where sound itself is the primary substantive interest. This is demonstrated through close discussion of what an amplified sonic sensibility can bring to three areas of contemporary geographical interest: geographies of landscape, of affect, and of geotechnologies.

‘Pour votre tranquillité’: Ambiance, atmosphere, and surveillance

La coupe urbaine peut-elle etre un lieu de rencontre entre les enjeux environnementaux globaux et les enjeux locaux d'ambiances situees prenant en compte les dimensions sensibles de l'espace et les pratiques habitantes ? Sur cette hypothese de depart de la coupe urbaine comme mode de representation permettant d'articuler ce qui habituellement est separe, a savoir les objets construits, le monde sensible et les pratiques sociales, nous avons mene un travail exploratoire applique aux preoccupations environnementales, ceci a travers deux thematiques pour lesquelles nous pouvions aisement mobiliser corpus et acteurs, celles des chaleurs urbaines (Ville de Grenoble) et celle des dechets solides (Ville de Sao Paulo). Deux categories de questions sont traitees a partir de corpus existants et d'une serie d'experimentations que nous avons menees : * Celles qui concernent les differents registres de connaissance impliques lorsqu'on parle d'ambiance et d'environnement, ceci entre techniciens, elus, scientifiques et usagers. Quand et comment les acteurs arrivent-ils (ou pourraient-ils mieux arriver) a articuler leurs connaissances du territoire, qu'elles soient principalement implicites (comme dans le cas des usagers) ou plutot explicite (notamment chez les scientifiques) ? * Celles qui concernent les outils de representation / communication / negociation. Comment, et grâce a quels moyens de representation, arrive-t-on a " croiser des donnees " et a faire le passage du domaine de la reflexion a celui du projet ? Pour ces deux questions et pour ces deux terrains, il s'agissait donc d'eprouver l'operationnalite de la coupe urbaine tant pour la gestion des enjeux environnementaux dans le developpement local que pour sa capacite de prise en compte du recit et des pratiques habitantes dans le processus de projet urbain. A cette double fin, ces experimentations proposent d'elargir les champs d'applications ordinaires de la coupe urbaine a un outil qui se veut a la fois pratique de terrain, technique de representation et peut-etre meme posture de projet, a savoir le transect urbain. Le transect se presente alors comme un dispositif se situant entre la coupe " clinique " et le parcours sensible empruntant a ces deux techniques pour les hybrider ; le transect se construit par le dessin, la photo, le texte, la video autant qu'il se pratique in situ. Rehabilitant de fait la dimension atmospherique dans les representations architecturales et urbaines, rendant possible l'inscription des recits, le transect peut devenir alors un mode d'interrogation et d'expression de l'espace sensible et des pratiques vecues a l'articulation entre analyse et conception. Un principe de " table longue " a ete mis en place pour debattre de ces enjeux et permettre une mise en situation et un partage des representations. Ce dispositif s'avere etre generateur de paroles, collecteur de notations et revelateur de realites vecues, trois proprietes utiles a l'etablissement d'un diagnostique prospectif partage.

L'ambiance est dans l'air : la dimension atmosphérique des ambiances architecturales et urbaines dans les approches environnementalistes

La volonte de lutter contre l'etalement urbain implique de reintroduire du logement sinon dans les centres-villes, du moins dans leur peripherie. Pour evaluer la possibilite d'introduire des projets d'habitat dans ces communes, nous nous sommes interroges sur la capacite des fragments qui constituent cette peripherie a se renouveler. Notre terrain d'etude a porte plus specifiquement sur trois de ces figures emblematiques du sud de l'agglomeration grenobloise : la megastructure avec l'Arlequin de Grenoble, la grille avec les projets urbains de Vigny-Musset (Grenoble) et du centre-ville d'Echirolles et la ville lineaire avec la rocade sud. Il s'est agit de comprendre les figures a la base de ces fragments, les regles de constitution de ces figures, et la capacite de ces figures a proliferer, a structurer leur environnement ou a se transformer. La mise en perspective des trois etudes de cas a permis de faire ressortir quelques caracteristiques communes quant a la maniere dont a ete concue au cours des annees 1970-1980 la " ville Sud " et de nous interroger sur la maniere dont les fragments urbains (constitues en reference explicite ou implicite a des figures) peuvent etre revisites pour etre pris en compte dans une strategie de recomposition de l'ensemble du sud de l'agglomeration grenobloise.

Mégastructure, grille et ville linéaire : trois figures pour projeter la périphérie grenobloise

How is it possible to take into account the architectural and urban complexity, which encompasses multiple issues, from technical ones to social or sensory ones, within an integrated research process? How is it possible to combine multiple disciplinary approaches (cultural, social, environmental, urban, and design) and scales (from the body one to the district or the city ones) with a single representation means? And finally, what kind of method can address these complex problems and however remaining “thrifty”? 
In this paper, we will describe a recent exploratory research work that intended to address all these issues at once. The main result consists in proposing an integrated methodology for analysis and representation. In our view, considering together these two domains is a way to take into account multiple research fields without having a more influential one, by keeping strong ties between field observation and results construction. In the end, graphic representation appears to be not only a means (for describing, understanding, planning and so on), but also a proper result to the architectural and urban research realm.

Understanding and Representing Urban Heterogeneity : The Case of Waste Collection in São Paulo

How can we visually represent the sonic dimension of a territory? And what can these representations teach us about a specific urban place and its ambiances? These are the two main questions that we wanted to address during a workshop that took place in the framework of the 3rd Cresson Winter School. This week combining teaching and in situ experimentations was dedicated to the question of the representations of sonic urban environment. The workshop – which took place in a district located in the heart of Grenoble –, invited the participants to produce representations in order to share their acoustic perception. Their works led indeed to the description of the complexity of urban experience and allowed to draw the first steps of a sensitive diagnosis of the investigated place. In this paper, we will discuss the role of the production of representations by inhabitants in the frame of participatory urban planning.
