Closure of Patent Foramen Ovale versus Medical Therapy after Cryptogenic Stroke
John D. Carroll,Jeffrey L. Saver,David E. Thaler,Richard W. Smalling,Scott M. Berry,Lee A. MacDonald,David Marks,David L. Tirschwell +7 more
TL;DR: There was no significant benefit associated with closure of a patent foramen ovale in adults who had had a cryptogenic ischemic stroke, however, closure was superior to medical therapy alone in the prespecified per-protocol and as-treated analyses, with a low rate of associated risks.
Journal ArticleDOI
Long-Term Outcomes of Patent Foramen Ovale Closure or Medical Therapy after Stroke
Jeffrey L. Saver,John D. Carroll,David E. Thaler,Richard W. Smalling,Lee A. MacDonald,David Marks,David L. Tirschwell +6 more
TL;DR: Among adults who had had a cryptogenic ischemic stroke, closure of a PFO was associated with a lower rate of recurrent isChemic strokes than medical therapy alone during extended follow‐up.
Journal ArticleDOI
Rationale and design for AMPLATZER Amulet Left Atrial Appendage Occluder IDE randomized controlled trial (Amulet IDE Trial).
Dhanunjaya Lakkireddy,Stephan Windecker,David E. Thaler,Lars Søndergaard,John D. Carroll,Michael R. Gold,Hongfei Guo,Kyle J. Brunner,James B. Hermiller,Hans-Christoph Diener,Boris Schmidt,Lee A. MacDonald,Moussa Mansour,Brijeshwar Maini,Joseph H. Levine +14 more
TL;DR: The Amulet IDE Trial is the first randomized head-to-head LAAO device trial and will provide data for the AMPLATZER Amulet occluder in a population with a high risk of stroke and bleeding.
Journal ArticleDOI
SCAI Guidelines for the Management of Patent Foramen Ovale
Clifford J. Kavinsky,Molly Szerlip,Andrew M. Goldsweig,Zahid Amin,Konstantinos Dean Boudoulas,John D. Carroll,Megan Coylewright,Sammy Elmariah,Lee A. MacDonald,Atman P. Shah,Christian Spies,Jonathan M. Tobis,Steven R. Messé,Emily Senerth,Yngve Falck-Ytter,I A Babatunde,Rebecca L. Morgan +16 more
TL;DR: The evidence-based guidelines from the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions (SCAI) aim to support patients, clinicians, and other stakeholders in decisions about management of patent foramen ovale (PFO) as discussed by the authors .
Journal ArticleDOI
Cost-effectiveness of percutaneous patent foramen ovale closure as secondary stroke prevention
David L. Tirschwell,Mark S. Turner,David E. Thaler,James Choulerton,David Marks,John D. Carroll,Lee A. MacDonald,Richard W. Smalling,Maria Koullick,Ning Yan Gu,Jeffrey L. Saver +10 more
TL;DR: Considering the UK healthcare system perspective, percutaneous PFO closure in cryptogenic ischemic stroke patients is a cost-effective stroke prevention strategy compared to medical therapy alone.
