Environmental correlates of population differentiation in Atlantic herring.
Dorte Bekkevold,Carl André,Thomas G. Dahlgren,Lotte Worsøe Clausen,Else Torstensen,Henrik Mosegaard,Gary R. Carvalho,Tina B. Christensen,Erika Norlinder,Daniel Eduardo Ruzzante +9 more
TL;DR: It is shown that reproductive isolation can be maintained in marine fish populations exhibiting substantial mixing during larval and adult life stages, and analyses incorporating genetic, spatial, and environmental parameters indicated that isolation mechanisms are associated with the specific salinity conditions on spawning locations.
Journal ArticleDOI
Biocomplexity in a highly migratory pelagic marine fish, Atlantic herring
Daniel Eduardo Ruzzante,Stefano Mariani,Dorte Bekkevold,Carl André,Henrik Mosegaard,Lotte Worsøe Clausen,Thomas G. Dahlgren,William F. Hutchinson,Emma M. C. Hatfield,Else Torstensen,J. Brigham,E. J. Simmonds,Linda Laikre,Lena C. Larsson,René J. M. Stet,Nils Ryman,Gary R. Carvalho +16 more
TL;DR: Evidence of correlated genetic and life history differentiation in an abundant and highly migratory pelagic fish, Atlantic herring, Clupea harengus, in the North Sea and adjacent areas is described and suggests the existence of more complex patterns of intraspecific diversity than was previously recognized.
Journal ArticleDOI
Lessons learned from practical approaches to reconcile mismatches between biological population structure and stock units of marine fish
Lisa A. Kerr,Niels T. Hintzen,Steven X. Cadrin,Lotte Worsøe Clausen,Mark Dickey-Collas,Daniel R. Goethel,Emma M. C. Hatfield,Jacob P. Kritzer,Richard D.M. Nash +8 more
TL;DR: Approaches currently being applied to improve the assessment and management process for marine fish in situations where complex spatial structure has led to an observed mismatch between the scale of biological populations and spatially-defined stock units are described.
Journal ArticleDOI
The sceptical optimist: challenges and perspectives for the application of environmental DNA in marine fisheries
Brian Klitgaard Hansen,Dorte Bekkevold,Lotte Worsøe Clausen,Lotte Worsøe Clausen,Einar Eg Nielsen +4 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors provide an overview of basic principles in relation to eDNA analysis with potential for marine fisheries application, and describe five major challenges in relation with application in fisheries assessment, where there is immediate need for knowledge building in marine systems.
Journal ArticleDOI
Application and validation of otolith microstructure as a stock identification method in mixed Atlantic herring (Clupea harengus) stocks in the North Sea and western Baltic
TL;DR: Results show that herring older than the 0-group can be classified using multiple linear regression of hatch time on median increment width, and an objective method of hatch-time estimation based on linear modelling was employed.
