Polly Boon,Jan Dirk te Biesebeek,Isabelle Sioen,Inge Huybrechts,Melissa De Neve,Pilar Amiano,Claudia Arganini,Mikel Azpiri,Leif Busk,Tue Christensen,Annett Hilbig,T. Hirvonen,Stella Koulouridaki,Lionel Lafay,Kirsi-Helena Liukkonen,Joanna Moschandreas,Stalo Papoutsouk,Lourdes Ribas-Barba,Jiri Ruprich,Lluis Serra-Majem,Michael Tornaritis,Aida Turrini,Maitane Urtizberea,Eric O. Verger,Anna Westerlund,Kersting Mathilde,Stefaan De Henauw,Jacob D. van Klaveren +27 more
TL;DR: Long-term dietary exposure to selenium in young children living in 12 different European countries was assessed and showed differences in exposure between countries based on food consumption patterns and decreased exposure with increased age.
Journal ArticleDOI
Intake of selected bioactive compounds from plant food supplements containing fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) among Finnish consumers.
Liisa Uusitalo,Maija Salmenhaara,Merja Isoniemi,Alicia Garcia-Alvarez,Lluis Serra-Majem,Lourdes Ribas-Barba,Paul Finglas,Jenny Plumb,Pirkko Tuominen,Kirsti Savela +9 more
TL;DR: The intake of trans-anethole did not exceed the acceptable daily intake, but PFS should be taken into account when assessing the total exposure, and the intakes of kaempferol, quercetin, luteolin, matairesinol and lignans were low in comparison with their dietary supply.
Journal ArticleDOI
Determinants of dietary lignan intake in a representative sample of young Spaniards: association with lower obesity prevalence among boys but not girls.
TL;DR: Boys with the highest lignan-rich products including cereals, whole-grain products and olive oil, presented less cases of obesity in this representative sample of Spanish children and adolescents, suggesting an active role of dietary lignans on obesity development, or is merely an indicator of a healthier lifestyle.
SCIENTIFIC REPORT submitted to EFSA Long-term dietary exposure to different food colours in young children living in different European countries 1
Inge Huybrechts,Isabelle Sioen,Polly Boon,Melissa De Neve,Claudia Arganini,Eugenia Bower,Tue Christensen,Annett Hilbig,Tero Hirvonen,Anthony Kafatos,Lourdes Ribas-Barba,Kersting Mathilde,Lluis Serra-Majem,Aida Turrini,Eric O. Verger,Michael Tornaritis,Jacob D. van Klaveren,Stefaan De Henauw +17 more
TL;DR: Although the results showed differences in exposure between countries, it is clear from this exercise that food consumption data in different countries can be categorised in a standard way to allow for harmonised exposure modelling.
Journal ArticleDOI
Trends in the association between smoking history and general/central obesity in Catalonia, Spain (1992-2003).
Alicia García Alvarez,Lluis Serra-Majem,Conxa Castell,Lourdes Ribas-Barba,Michelle A. Mendez +4 more
TL;DR: Results suggest a positive association between heavy smoking and central fatness among men, but no association between former smoking and general/central fatness; findings strengthen arguments for promoting smoking cessation to reduce smoking -and obesity- associated morbidity and mortality.
