Statistical Analysis with Missing Data

On August 17, 2017 at 12∶41:04 UTC the Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo gravitational-wave detectors made their first observation of a binary neutron star inspiral. The signal, GW170817, was detected with a combined signal-to-noise ratio of 32.4 and a false-alarm-rate estimate of less than one per 8.0×10^{4}  years. We infer the component masses of the binary to be between 0.86 and 2.26  M_{⊙}, in agreement with masses of known neutron stars. Restricting the component spins to the range inferred in binary neutron stars, we find the component masses to be in the range 1.17-1.60  M_{⊙}, with the total mass of the system 2.74_{-0.01}^{+0.04}M_{⊙}. The source was localized within a sky region of 28  deg^{2} (90% probability) and had a luminosity distance of 40_{-14}^{+8}  Mpc, the closest and most precisely localized gravitational-wave signal yet. The association with the γ-ray burst GRB 170817A, detected by Fermi-GBM 1.7 s after the coalescence, corroborates the hypothesis of a neutron star merger and provides the first direct evidence of a link between these mergers and short γ-ray bursts. Subsequent identification of transient counterparts across the electromagnetic spectrum in the same location further supports the interpretation of this event as a neutron star merger. This unprecedented joint gravitational and electromagnetic observation provides insight into astrophysics, dense matter, gravitation, and cosmology.

GW170817: observation of gravitational waves from a binary neutron star inspiral

On September 14, 2015 at 09:50:45 UTC the two detectors of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory simultaneously observed a transient gravitational-wave signal. The signal sweeps upwards in frequency from 35 to 250 Hz with a peak gravitational-wave strain of 1.0×10(-21). It matches the waveform predicted by general relativity for the inspiral and merger of a pair of black holes and the ringdown of the resulting single black hole. The signal was observed with a matched-filter signal-to-noise ratio of 24 and a false alarm rate estimated to be less than 1 event per 203,000 years, equivalent to a significance greater than 5.1σ. The source lies at a luminosity distance of 410(-180)(+160)  Mpc corresponding to a redshift z=0.09(-0.04)(+0.03). In the source frame, the initial black hole masses are 36(-4)(+5)M⊙ and 29(-4)(+4)M⊙, and the final black hole mass is 62(-4)(+4)M⊙, with 3.0(-0.5)(+0.5)M⊙c(2) radiated in gravitational waves. All uncertainties define 90% credible intervals. These observations demonstrate the existence of binary stellar-mass black hole systems. This is the first direct detection of gravitational waves and the first observation of a binary black hole merger.

The Observation of Gravitational Waves from a Binary Black Hole Merger

The Swift mission, scheduled for launch in 2004, is a multiwavelength observatory for gamma-ray burst (GRB) astronomy. It is a first-of-its-kind autonomous rapid-slewing satellite for transient astronomy and pioneers the way for future rapid-reaction and multiwavelength missions. It will be far more powerful than any previous GRB mission, observing more than 100 bursts yr � 1 and performing detailed X-ray and UV/optical afterglow observations spanning timescales from 1 minute to several days after the burst. The objectives are to (1) determine the origin of GRBs, (2) classify GRBs and search for new types, (3) study the interaction of the ultrarelativistic outflows of GRBs with their surrounding medium, and (4) use GRBs to study the early universe out to z >10. The mission is being developed by a NASA-led international collaboration. It will carry three instruments: a newgeneration wide-field gamma-ray (15‐150 keV) detector that will detect bursts, calculate 1 0 ‐4 0 positions, and trigger autonomous spacecraft slews; a narrow-field X-ray telescope that will give 5 00 positions and perform spectroscopy in the 0.2‐10 keV band; and a narrow-field UV/optical telescope that will operate in the 170‐ 600 nm band and provide 0B3 positions and optical finding charts. Redshift determinations will be made for most bursts. In addition to the primary GRB science, the mission will perform a hard X-ray survey to a sensitivity of � 1m crab (� 2;10 � 11 ergs cm � 2 s � 1 in the 15‐150 keV band), more than an order of magnitude better than HEAO 1 A-4. The Swift Gamma-Ray Burst Mission

On 2017 August 17 a binary neutron star coalescence candidate (later designated GW170817) with merger time 12:41:04 UTC was observed through gravitational waves by the Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo detectors. The Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor independently detected a gamma-ray burst (GRB 170817A) with a time delay of $\sim 1.7\,{\rm{s}}$ with respect to the merger time. From the gravitational-wave signal, the source was initially localized to a sky region of 31 deg2 at a luminosity distance of ${40}_{-8}^{+8}$ Mpc and with component masses consistent with neutron stars. The component masses were later measured to be in the range 0.86 to 2.26 $\,{M}_{\odot }$. An extensive observing campaign was launched across the electromagnetic spectrum leading to the discovery of a bright optical transient (SSS17a, now with the IAU identification of AT 2017gfo) in NGC 4993 (at $\sim 40\,{\rm{Mpc}}$) less than 11 hours after the merger by the One-Meter, Two Hemisphere (1M2H) team using the 1 m Swope Telescope. The optical transient was independently detected by multiple teams within an hour. Subsequent observations targeted the object and its environment. Early ultraviolet observations revealed a blue transient that faded within 48 hours. Optical and infrared observations showed a redward evolution over ~10 days. Following early non-detections, X-ray and radio emission were discovered at the transient's position $\sim 9$ and $\sim 16$ days, respectively, after the merger. Both the X-ray and radio emission likely arise from a physical process that is distinct from the one that generates the UV/optical/near-infrared emission. No ultra-high-energy gamma-rays and no neutrino candidates consistent with the source were found in follow-up searches. These observations support the hypothesis that GW170817 was produced by the merger of two neutron stars in NGC 4993 followed by a short gamma-ray burst (GRB 170817A) and a kilonova/macronova powered by the radioactive decay of r-process nuclei synthesized in the ejecta.

Multi-messenger observations of a binary neutron star merger

On semi-degenerate equilibrium configurations of a collisionless self-gravitating Fermi gas

Future very-large-area X-ray instruments (for which the effective area is larger than $>3$m$^2$) will be able to measure the frequencies of quasi-periodic oscillations~(QPOs) observed in the X-ray flux from accreting compact objects with sub-percent precision. If correctly modeled, QPOs can provide a novel way to test the strong-field regime of gravity. By using the relativistic precession model and a modified version of the epicyclic resonance model, we develop a method to test general relativity against a generic class of theories with quadratic curvature corrections. With the instrumentation being studied for future missions such as eXTP, LOFT, or STROBE-X, a measurement of at least two QPO triplets from a stellar mass black hole can set stringent constraints on the coupling parameters of quadratic gravity.

Geodesic models of quasi-periodic-oscillations as probes of quadratic gravity

We take advantage of the high sensitivity of the IBIS/ISGRI telescope and the improvements in the data analysis software to investigate the nature of the still poorly known X-ray source AX J1910.7+0917, and search for close-by previously undetected objects. We analyze all publicly available INTEGRAL data of AX J1910.7+0917, together with a number of archival observations that were carried out in the direction of the source with Chandra, XMM-Newton, and ASCA. In the IBIS/ISGRI field-of-view around AX J1910.7+0917, we discovered three new sources: IGR J19173+0747, IGR J19294+1327 and IGR J19149+1036; the latter is positionally coincident with the Einstein source 2E 1912.5+1031. For the first two sources, we also report the results of follow-up observations carried out with Swift/XRT. AX J1910.7+0917 features a clear variability in the X-rays. Its spectrum can be well described with an absorbed (N_H~6x10^(22) cm^(-2)) power-law ({\Gamma}~1.5) model plus an iron line at ~6.4 keV. We also obtained a refined position and report on possible infrared counterparts. The present data do not allow for a unique classification of the sources. Based on the property of its X-ray emission and the analysis of a likely infrared counterpart, we investigate different possibilities for the nature of AX J1910.7+0917.

AX J1910.7+0917 and three newly discovered INTEGRAL sources

Binary neutron star (NS) mergers are among the most promising sources of gravitational waves (GWs), as well as candidate progenitors for short Gamma-Ray Bursts (SGRBs). Depending on the total initial mass of the system, and the NS equation of state (EOS), the post-merger phase can see a prompt collapse to a black hole, or the formation of a supramassive NS, or even a stable NS. In the case of post-merger NS (PMNS) formation, magnetic field amplification during the merger will produce a magnetar with a large induced mass quadrupole moment, and millisecond spin. If the timescale for orthogonalization of the magnetic symmetry axis with the spin axis is sufficiently short the NS will radiate its spin down energy primarily via GWs. Here we study this scenario for various outcomes of NS formation: we generalise the set of equilibrium states for a twisted torus magnetic configuration to include solutions that, at a fixed exterior dipole field, carry a larger magnetic energy reservoir; we hence compute their magnetic ellipticity and the strength of the expected GW signal as a function of the magnitude of the dipole and toroidal field. The relative number of GW detections from PMNSs and from binary NSs is a strong function of the NS equation of state (EOS), being higher (~ 1%) for the stiffest EOSs and negligibly small for the softest ones. For intermediate-stiffness EOSs, such as the n=4/7 polytrope recently used by Giacomazzo \& Perna or the GM1 used by Lasky et al., the relative fraction is ~0.3%; correspondingly we estimate a GW detection rate from stable PMNSs of ~ (0.1-1) yr$^{-1}$ with Advanced detectors, and of ~ (100-1000) yr$^{-1}$ with third generation detectors such as the Einstein Telescope. Measurement of such GW signal would provide strong constraints on the NS EOS and on the nature of the binary progenitors giving rise to SGRBs.

Gravitational waves from massive magnetars formed in binary neutron star mergers

During a systematic search for periodic signals in a sample of ROSAT PSPC (0.1-2.4 keV) light curves, we discovered 12min large amplitude X-ray pulsations in 1WGA J1958.2+3232, an X-ray source which lies close to the galactic plane. The energy spectrum is well fit by a power law with a photon index of 0.8, corresponding to an X-ray flux of about 10E-12 ergs cmE-2 sE-1. The source is probably a long period, low luminosity X-ray pulsar, similar to X Per, or an intermediate polar.
