Journal ArticleDOI
Thiopurine methyltransferase (TPMT) activity and adverse effects of azathioprine in inflammatory bowel disease: long-term follow-up study of 394 patients.
TL;DR: The strategy of determining T PMT activity in all patients prior to initiating treatment with azathioprine could help to minimize the risk of myelotoxicity, as patients with intermediate TPMT activity had fourfold more risk than high TPMt activity patients.
Journal Article
Reviewing the mechanism of action of thiopurine drugs: towards a new paradigm in clinical practice.
Carlos Cara,Amado Salvador Peña,Miquel Sans,Luis Rodrigo,Mercedes Guerrero-Esteo,Joaquín Hinojosa,Julio Garcia-Paredes,Luis G. Guijarro +7 more
TL;DR: The final proposal suggests that the immunosuppressive effects of thiopurine drugs are due to a balanced combination of antimetabolic and pro-apoptotic actions.
Journal ArticleDOI
Thiopurine methyltransferase activity in Spain: a study of 14,545 patients.
Javier P. Gisbert,Fernando Gomollón,Carlos Cara,Marta Luna,Yago González-Lama,José María Pajares,Jose Luis Mate,Luis G. Guijarro +7 more
TL;DR: It is shown that 0.5% of patients with low TPMT activity are indicated to be at a higher risk of myelotoxicity with azathioprine/6-MP, a figure similar or slightly higher than that reported in other areas.
Journal ArticleDOI
An Updated Review of SARS-CoV-2 Vaccines and the Importance of Effective Vaccination Programs in Pandemic Times
Cielo García-Montero,Oscar Fraile-Martínez,Coral Bravo,Coral Bravo,Diego Torres-Carranza,Lara Sanchez-Trujillo,Ana M Gómez-Lahoz,Luis G. Guijarro,Natalio García-Honduvilla,Natalio García-Honduvilla,Ángel Asúnsolo,Ángel Asúnsolo,Julia Buján,Julia Buján,Jorge Monserrat,Jorge Monserrat,Encarnación Serrano,Melchor Alvarez-Mon,Melchor Alvarez-Mon,Juan De León-Luis,Miguel Angel Alvarez-Mon,Miguel Angel Alvarez-Mon,Miguel A Ortega,Miguel A Ortega +23 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors present a review of the landscape of clinical development of vaccine candidates, specifically, the top five vaccines that are already being assessed in Phase IV clinical trials (BNT162b2, mRNA-1273, AZD1222, Ad26.COV2.S, and CoronaVac).
Journal ArticleDOI
Azathioprine acts upon rat hepatocyte mitochondria and stress-activated protein kinases leading to necrosis: protective role of N-acetyl-L-cysteine.
César Menor,María Dolores Fernández-Moreno,Jesús A. Fueyo,Oscar Escribano,Tomas Olleros,Encarna Arriaza,Carlos Cara,Michele Lorusso,Marco Di Paola,Irene D Román,Luis G. Guijarro +10 more
TL;DR: Findings suggest that azathioprine effects correlate to mitochondrial dysfunction and activation of stress-activated protein kinase pathways leading to necrotic cell death.
