Journal ArticleDOI
Polyfluoroalkyl compounds in the aquatic environment: a review of their occurrence and fate
TL;DR: The objective of this article is to give an overview on existing knowledge of the occurrence, fate and processes of PFCs in the aquatic environment, identifies knowledge gaps, presents conclusions and recommendations for future work.
Journal ArticleDOI
Fate and effects of poly‐ and perfluoroalkyl substances in the aquatic environment: A review
Lutz Ahrens,Mirco Bundschuh +1 more
TL;DR: Because of the continuous emission of PFASs, further information about their ecotoxicological potential among multiple generations, species interactions, and mixture toxicity seems fundamental to reliably assess the risks forPFASs to affect ecosystem structure and function in the aquatic environment.
Journal ArticleDOI
Distribution of polyfluoroalkyl compounds in water, suspended particulate matter and sediment from Tokyo Bay, Japan.
Lutz Ahrens,Sachi Taniyasu,Leo W. Y. Yeung,Leo W. Y. Yeung,Nobuyoshi Yamashita,Paul K.S. Lam,Ralf Ebinghaus +6 more
TL;DR: This study examined the environmental behaviour and fate of polyfluoroalkyl compounds (PFCs) found in water, suspended particulate matter (SPM) and sediment from Tokyo Bay, Japan, in 2008 and showed that the sorption of PFCs on SPM increases by 0.52-0.75 log units for each additional CF(2) moiety.
Journal ArticleDOI
Removal efficiency of multiple poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in drinking water using granular activated carbon (GAC) and anion exchange (AE) column tests
TL;DR: The results indicate that designers and operators of AE and GAC treatment processes must take into consideration the selective nature of PFAS removal and associated desorption of short-chain PFCAs during co-removal of multiple PFASs.
Journal ArticleDOI
Distribution and sources of polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in the River Rhine watershed
Axel Möller,Lutz Ahrens,Renate Surm,Joke W. Westerveld,Frans W.M. van der Wielen,Ralf Ebinghaus,Pim de Voogt +6 more
TL;DR: Fluxes of SigmaPFAS were estimated to be approximately 6 tonnes/year which is much higher than previous estimations, and both the River Rhine and the River Scheldt seem to act as important sources of PFAS into the North Sea.
