If we hope to automatically detect and diagnose failures in large-scale computer systems, we must study real deployed systems and the data they generate. Progress has been hampered by the inaccessibility of empirical data. This paper addresses that dearth by examining system logs from five supercomputers, with the aim of providing useful insight and direction for future research into the use of such logs. We present details about the systems, methods of log collection, and how alerts were identified; propose a simpler and more effective filtering algorithm; and define operational context to encompass the crucial information that we found to be currently missing from most logs. The machines we consider (and the number of processors) are: Blue Gene/L (131072), Red Storm (10880), Thunderbird (9024), Spirit (1028), and Liberty (512). This is the first study of raw system logs from multiple supercomputers.

What Supercomputers Say: A Study of Five System Logs

The Sunway TaihuLight supercomputer is the worlds first system with a peak performance greater than 100 PFlops. In this paper, we provide a detailed introduction to the TaihuLight system. In contrast with other existing heterogeneous supercomputers, which include both CPU processors and PCIe-connected many-core accelerators (NVIDIA GPU or Intel Xeon Phi), the computing power of TaihuLight is provided by a homegrown many-core SW26010 CPU that includes both the management processing elements (MPEs) and computing processing elements (CPEs) in one chip. With 260 processing elements in one CPU, a single SW26010 provides a peak performance of over three TFlops. To alleviate the memory bandwidth bottleneck in most applications, each CPE comes with a scratch pad memory, which serves as a user-controlled cache. To support the parallelization of programs on the new many-core architecture, in addition to the basic C/C++ and Fortran compilers, the system provides a customized Sunway OpenACC tool that supports the OpenACC 2.0 syntax. This paper also reports our preliminary efforts on developing and optimizing applications on the TaihuLight system, focusing on key application domains, such as earth system modeling, ocean surface wave modeling, atomistic simulation, and phase-field simulation.

The Sunway TaihuLight supercomputer: system and applications

The main interconnect of the massively parallel Blue Gene®/L is a three-dimensional torus network with dynamic virtual cut-through routing. This paper describes both the architecture and the microarchitecture of the torus and a network performance simulator. Both simulation results and hardware measurements are presented.

Left unchecked, the fundamental drive to increase peak performance using tens of thousands of power hungry components will lead to intolerable operating costs and failure rates. High-performance, power-aware distributed computing reduces power and energy consumption of distributed applications and systems without sacrificing performance. Generally, we use DVS (Dynamic Voltage Scaling) technology now available in high-performance microprocessors to reduce power consumption during parallel application runs when peak CPU performance is not necessary due to load imbalance, communication delays, etc. We propose distributed performance-directed DVS scheduling strategies for use in scalable power-aware HPC clusters. By varying scheduling granularity we can obtain significant energy savings without increasing execution time (36% for FT from NAS PB). We created a software framework to implement and evaluate our various techniques and show performance-directed scheduling consistently saves more energy (nearly 25% for several codes) than comparable approaches with less impact on execution time (< 5%). Additionally, we illustrate the use of energy-delay products to automatically select distributed DVS schedules that meet users needs.

Performance-constrained Distributed DVS Scheduling for Scientific Applications on Power-aware Clusters

Power-aware scheduling problem has been a recent issue in cluster systems not only for operational cost due to electricity cost, but also for system reliability. As recent commodity processors support multiple operating points under various supply voltage levels, Dynamic Voltage Scaling (DVS) scheduling algorithms can reduce power consumption by controlling appropriate voltage levels. In this paper, we provide power-aware scheduling algorithms for bag-of-tasks applications with deadline constraints on DVS-enabled cluster systems in order to minimize power consumption as well as to meet the deadlines specified by application users. A bag-of-tasks application should finish all the sub-tasks before the deadline, so that the DVS scheduling scheme should consider the deadline as well. We provide the DVS scheduling algorithms for both time-shared and space-shared resource sharing policies. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithms reduce much power consumption compared to static voltage schemes.

Power Aware Scheduling of Bag-of-Tasks Applications with Deadline Constraints on DVS-enabled Clusters

This paper gives an overview of the BlueGene/L Supercomputer. This is a jointly funded research partnership between IBM and the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory as part of the United States Department of Energy ASCI Advanced Architecture Research Program. Application performance and scaling studies have recently been initiated with partners at a number of academic and government institutions, including the San Diego Supercomputer Center and the California Institute of Technology. This massively parallel system of 65,536 nodes is based on a new architecture that exploits system-on-a-chip technology to deliver target peak processing power of 360 teraFLOPS (trillion floating-point operations per second). The machine is scheduled to be operational in the 2004--2005 time frame, at price/performance and power consumption/performance targets unobtainable with conventional architectures.
