In this review, we discuss the physics underlying the operation of single and multiple heterojunction, vacuum-deposited organic solar cells based on small molecular weight thin films. For single heterojunction cells, we find that the need for direct contact between the deposited electrode and the active organics leads to quenching of excitons. An improved device architecture, the double heterojunction, is shown to confine excitons within the active layers, allowing substantially higher internal efficiencies to be achieved. A full optical and electrical analysis of the double heterostructure architecture leads to optimal cell design as a function of the optical properties and exciton diffusion lengths of the photoactive materials. Combining the double heterostructure with novel light trapping schemes, devices with external efficiencies approaching their internal efficiency are obtained. Small molecular weight organic thin-film photodetectors and solar cells

Electron and ambipolar transport in organic field-effect transistors.

Field-effect transistors based on solution-processible organic semiconductors have experienced impressive improvements in both performance and reliability in recent years, and printing-based manufacturing processes for integrated transistor circuits are being developed to realize low-cost, large-area electronic products on flexible substrates. This article reviews the materials, charge-transport, and device physics of solution-processed organic field-effect transistors, focusing in particular on the physics of the active semiconductor/dielectric interface. Issues such as the relationship between microstructure and charge transport, the critical role of the gate dielectric, the influence of polaronic relaxation and disorder effects on charge transport, charge-injection mechanisms, and the current understanding of mechanisms for charge trapping are reviewed. Many interesting questions on how the molecular and electronic structures and the presence of defects at organic/organic heterointerfaces influence the device performance and stability remain to be explored.

Device Physics of Solution‐Processed Organic Field‐Effect Transistors

Most present-day semiconductor devices use inorganic crystalline materials, with single-crystalline silicon dominating other materials like GaAs by about a factor of 1000. Despite the advantages of single-crystalline inorganic semiconductors like high room-temperature mobility (up to 1000 cm2/(V s)) and high stability, these materials are less suitable for low-cost and large-area applications. Additionally, silicon is an indirect semiconductor and therefore is not well suited for optoelectronic applications like light-emitting diodes. Solar cells from silicon are expensive and require a large amount of energy for their fabrication, leading to a long energy payback time. As an alternative, organic semiconductors have recently gained much attention (for review articles, see refs 1 -3 (OLEDs), ref 4 (organic electronics in general), and refs 5 and 6 (organic solar cells)). Originally, much of the research concentrated on single crystals, which can have mobilities of a few cm2/(V s) at room temperature and even much higher values at low temperature, as shown in the pioneering work of Karl et al.7 However, for practical applications, thinfilm organic semiconductors with disordered morphology, such as evaporated small-molecule compounds or polymers processed from solution, are prevailing. Highly efficient organic devices based on electrically doped transport layers.

Over the past 20 years, organic transistors have developed from a laboratory curiosity to a commercially viable technology. This critical review provides a short summary of several important aspects of organic transistors, including materials, microstructure, carrier transport, manufacturing, electrical properties, and performance limitations (200 references).

Organic thin-film transistors.

The field-effect mobility in an organic thin-film transistor is studied theoretically. From a percolation model of hopping between localized states and a transistor model an analytic expression for the field-effect mobility is obtained. The theory is applied to describe the experiments by Brown et al. [Synth. Met. 88, 37 (1997)] on solution-processed amorphous organic transistors, made from a polymer (polythienylene vinylene) and from a small molecule (pentacene). Good agreement is obtained, with respect to both the gate voltage and the temperature dependence of the mobility.

Theory of the field-effect mobility in amorphous organic transistors

The dynamics of excitons in disordered molecular solids is studied theoretically, taking into account migration between different sites, recombination, and dissociation into free charge carriers in the presence of an electric field. The theory is applied to interpret the results of electric-field-induced photoluminescence (PL) quenching experiments on molecularly doped polymers by Deussen et al. [Chem. Phys. 207, 147 (1996)]. Using an intermolecular dissociation mechanism, the dependence of the PL quenching on the electric-field strength and the dopant concentration, and the time evolution of the transient PL quenching can be well described. The results constitute additional proof of the distinct exciton dissociation mechanisms in conjugated polymer blends and molecularly doped polymers.

Theory of electric-field-induced photoluminescence quenching in disordered molecular solids

The photochemical bleaching of an energetically disordered molecular system is studied theoretically. Spectral diffusion is taken into account, which is marked by downhill energy transfer of excitons between the molecular sites. The resulting redshift in the excited-state occupation gives rise to a relatively stronger bleaching of the lower-lying states, which is observed in the blueshift of both the absorption spectrum and the photoluminescence spectrum of the bleached system. During the photochemical bleaching reaction, quenching sites are formed, at which the excitons decay nonradiatively. These quenching sites modify the excited-state dynamics and thus the bleaching process. The relevance of our model to the photobleaching of poly$(p$-phenylene-vinylene) is pointed out.
