Observation of a new particle in the search for the Standard Model Higgs boson with the ATLAS detector at the LHC

Observation of a new boson at a mass of 125 GeV with the CMS experiment at the LHC

Combined ATLAS and CMS measurements of the Higgs boson production and decay rates, as well as constraints on its couplings to vector bosons and fermions, are presented. The combination is based on the analysis of five production processes, namely gluon fusion, vector boson fusion, and associated production with a $W$ or a $Z$ boson or a pair of top quarks, and of the six decay modes $H \to ZZ, WW$, $\gamma\gamma, \tau\tau, bb$, and $\mu\mu$. All results are reported assuming a value of 125.09 GeV for the Higgs boson mass, the result of the combined measurement by the ATLAS and CMS experiments. The analysis uses the CERN LHC proton--proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS and CMS experiments in 2011 and 2012, corresponding to integrated luminosities per experiment of approximately 5 fb$^{-1}$ at $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV and 20 fb$^{-1}$ at $\sqrt{s} = 8$ TeV. The Higgs boson production and decay rates measured by the two experiments are combined within the context of three generic parameterisations: two based on cross sections and branching fractions, and one on ratios of coupling modifiers. Several interpretations of the measurements with more model-dependent parameterisations are also given. The combined signal yield relative to the Standard Model prediction is measured to be 1.09 $\pm$ 0.11. The combined measurements lead to observed significances for the vector boson fusion production process and for the $H \to \tau\tau$ decay of $5.4$ and $5.5$ standard deviations, respectively. The data are consistent with the Standard Model predictions for all parameterisations considered.

Measurements of the Higgs boson production and decay rates and constraints on its couplings from a combined ATLAS and CMS analysis of the LHC $pp$ collision data at $\sqrt{s}=$ 7 and 8 TeV

Combined results are reported from searches for the standard model Higgs boson in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV in five Higgs boson decay modes: gamma pair, b-quark pair, tau lepton pair, W pair, and Z pair. The explored Higgs boson mass range is 110-600 GeV. The analysed data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 4.6-4.8 inverse femtobarns. The expected excluded mass range in the absence of the standard model Higgs boson is 118-543 GeV at 95% CL. The observed results exclude the standard model Higgs boson in the mass range 127-600 GeV at 95% CL, and in the mass range 129-525 GeV at 99% CL. An excess of events above the expected standard model background is observed at the low end of the explored mass range making the observed limits weaker than expected in the absence of a signal. The largest excess, with a local significance of 3.1 sigma, is observed for a Higgs boson mass hypothesis of 124 GeV. The global significance of observing an excess with a local significance greater than 3.1 sigma anywhere in the search range 110-600 (110-145) GeV is estimated to be 1.5 sigma (2.1 sigma). More data are required to ascertain the origin of this excess.

Combined results of searches for the standard model Higgs boson in pp collisions at √s = 7 TeV

This Report summarizes the results of the activities in 2012 and the first half of 2013 of the LHC Higgs Cross Section Working Group. The main goal of the working group was to present the state of the art of Higgs Physics at the LHC, integrating all new results that have appeared in the last few years. This report follows the first working group report Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 1. Inclusive Observables (CERN-2011-002) and the second working group report Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 2. Differential Distributions (CERN-2012-002). After the discovery of a Higgs boson at the LHC in mid-2012 this report focuses on refined prediction of Standard Model (SM) Higgs phenomenology around the experimentally observed value of 125-126 GeV, refined predictions for heavy SM-like Higgs bosons as well as predictions in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model and first steps to go beyond these models. The other main focus is on the extraction of the characteristics and properties of the newly discovered particle such as couplings to SM particles, spin and CP-quantum numbers etc.

Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 3. Higgs Properties

The decay of the standard model Higgs boson into four leptons via a virtual $W$- or $Z$-boson pair is one of the most important decay modes in the Higgs-boson search at the Large Hadron Collider. We present the complete electroweak radiative corrections of $\mathcal{O}(\ensuremath{\alpha})$ to these processes, including improvements beyond $\mathcal{O}(\ensuremath{\alpha})$ originating from heavy-Higgs effects and final-state radiation. The intermediate $W$- and $Z$-boson resonances are described (without any expansion or on-shell approximation) by consistently employing complex mass parameters for the gauge bosons (complex-mass scheme). The corrections to partial decay widths typically amount to some percent and increase with growing Higgs mass ${M}_{H}$, reaching about 8% at ${M}_{H}\ensuremath{\sim}500\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{GeV}$. For not too large Higgs masses (${M}_{H}\ensuremath{\lesssim}400\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{GeV}$) the corrections to the partial decay widths can be reproduced within $\ensuremath{\lesssim}2%$ by simple approximations. For angular distributions the corrections are somewhat larger and distort the shapes. For invariant-mass distributions of fermion pairs they can reach several tens of percent depending on the treatment of photon radiation. The discussed corrections have been implemented in a Monte Carlo event generator called Prophecy4f.

Precise predictions for the Higgs-boson decay H ---> WW/ZZ ---> 4 leptons

Extending earlier work, we provide predictions obtained with the Monte Carlo generator PROPHECY4f for the decays H → ZZ/WW → 4l including the complete electroweak O ( α ) corrections and some higher-order improvements. The gauge-boson resonances are described in the complex-mass scheme. Here, particular attention is paid to a comparison of different final states with identical charges, such as e + e − μ + μ − and μ + μ − μ + μ − .

Precision calculations for the Higgs decays H → ZZ/WW → 4 leptons

We provide predictions for the decays H → ZZ → 4 l and H → WW → 4 l including the complete electroweak O ( α ) corrections and improvements by higher-order final-state radiation and two-loop corrections proportional to G μ 2 M H 4 . The gauge-boson resonances are described in the complex-mass scheme. We find corrections at the level of 1–8% for the partial widths.
