Trehalose induces autophagy via lysosomal-mediated TFEB activation in models of motoneuron degeneration
Paola Rusmini,Katia Cortese,Valeria Crippa,Riccardo Cristofani,Maria Elena Cicardi,Veronica Ferrari,G. Vezzoli,B. Tedesco,M. Meroni,Elio Messi,M. Piccolella,Mariarita Galbiati,Massimiliano Garrè,Elena Morelli,Thomas Vaccari,Angelo Poletti +15 more
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that trehalose regulates autophagy by inducing rapid and transient lysosomal enlargement and membrane permeabilization (LMP) by correlated with the calcium-dependent phosphatase PPP3/calcineurin activation, TFEB dephosphorylation and nuclear translocation.
Journal ArticleDOI
The product of X-linked Kallmann's syndrome gene (KAL1) affects the migratory activity of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH)-producing neurons
Anna Cariboni,Federica Pimpinelli,Sophia Colamarino,Roberta Zaninetti,M. Piccolella,Cristiano Rumio,Flavio Piva,Elena I. Rugarli,Roberto Maggi +8 more
TL;DR: Results strongly suggest an involvement of anosmin-1 in the control of the migratory behaviour of GnRH neurons and provide novel information on the pathogenesis of X-linked Kallmann's syndrome.
Journal ArticleDOI
Transcriptional induction of the heat shock protein B8 mediates the clearance of misfolded proteins responsible for motor neuron diseases
Valeria Crippa,Vito Giuseppe D'Agostino,Riccardo Cristofani,Paola Rusmini,Maria Elena Cicardi,Elio Messi,Rosa Loffredo,Michael Pancher,M. Piccolella,Mariarita Galbiati,M. Meroni,Cristina Cereda,Serena Carra,Alessandro Provenzani,Angelo Poletti,Angelo Poletti +15 more
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that HSPB8 also counteracts accumulation of aberrantly localized misfolded forms of TDP-43 and its 25 KDa fragment involved in most sporadic cases of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (sALS) and of Fronto Lateral Temporal Dementia (FLTD).
Journal ArticleDOI
Tolerance of chronic hypercapnia by the European eel Anguilla anguilla.
David J. McKenzie,M. Piccolella,A. Z. Dalla Valle,A. Z. Dalla Valle,Edwin W. Taylor,C.L. Bolis,John F. Steffensen +6 more
TL;DR: The results indicate that chronic hypercapnia was not a physiological stress for the eel, which can tolerate extracellular acidosis and extremely low Cl– levels while compensating tissue intracellular pH, and which can meet the O2 requirements of routine and active metabolism despite profound hypoxaemia.
Journal ArticleDOI
The small heat shock protein B8 (HSPB8) efficiently removes aggregating species of dipeptides produced in C9ORF72-related neurodegenerative diseases
Riccardo Cristofani,Valeria Crippa,G. Vezzoli,Paola Rusmini,Mariarita Galbiati,Maria Elena Cicardi,M. Meroni,Veronica Ferrari,B. Tedesco,M. Piccolella,Elio Messi,Serena Carra,Angelo Poletti,Angelo Poletti +13 more
TL;DR: While the DPRs are mainly processed via autophagy, this system is unable to fully clear their aggregated forms, and thus they tend to accumulate in basal conditions, and the induction of HSPB8 might represent a valid approach to decrease DPR-mediated toxicity and maintain motoneuron viability.
