Reactivity of Surface Species in Heterogeneous Catalysts Probed by In Situ X-ray Absorption Techniques

The SwissFEL X-ray Free Electron Laser (XFEL) facility started construction at the Paul Scherrer Institute (Villigen, Switzerland) in 2013 and will be ready to accept its first users in 2018 on the Aramis hard X-ray branch. In the following sections we will summarize the various aspects of the project, including the design of the soft and hard X-ray branches of the accelerator, the results of SwissFEL performance simulations, details of the photon beamlines and experimental stations, and our first commissioning results.

SwissFEL: The Swiss X-ray Free Electron Laser

Development of efficient and economic water oxidation catalysts (WOCs) remains a crucial bottleneck on the way to artificial photosynthesis applications. Over the past few decades, WOC research has turned into a fascinating interdisciplinary field that ranges from bio-inspired molecular design over nanomaterials and thin films to solid materials tuning. Under the umbrella of WOC optimization, advanced in situ/operando analytical techniques are being developed as increasingly powerful tools to elucidate the controversial discussions about the molecular or nanoscale nature of many WOCs. More and more of these approaches also enable the monitoring of possible key intermediates as an essential prerequisite for proposing catalytic mechanisms. This review is organized in three main parts: first, recent highlights outline frontiers in WOC development, such as the benefits of connecting molecular WOCs with solids along with the introduction of molecular concepts into heterogeneous WOC research. Next, a brief overview of emerging in situ/operando approaches demonstrates new options for monitoring WOC transformations. Finally, selected monitoring studies over the entire WOC dimensionality spectrum illustrate interesting cases of catalytic border crossings as new input for WOC construction.

Frontiers of water oxidation: the quest for true catalysts

We review the tremendous advances in ultrafast X-ray science, over the past 15 years, making the best use of new ultrashort X-ray sources including table-top or large-scale facilities. Different complementary X-ray-based techniques, including spectroscopy, scattering, and diffraction, are presented. The broad and expanding spectrum of these techniques in the ultrafast time domain is delivering new insight into the dynamics of molecular systems, of solutions, of solids, and of biosystems. Probing the time evolution of the electronic and structural degrees of freedom of these systems on the time scales of femtosecond to picoseconds delivers new insight into our understanding of dynamical matter.

Photoinduced Structural Dynamics of Molecular Systems Mapped by Time-Resolved X-ray Methods

Recent experimental and theoretical developments in time-resolved X-ray spectroscopies

We report on the design and performance of a wavelength-dispersive type spectrometer based on the von Hamos geometry. The spectrometer is equipped with a segmented-type crystal for x-ray diffraction and provides an energy resolution in the order of 0.25 eV and 1 eV over an energy range of 8000 eV-9600 eV. The use of a segmented crystal results in a simple and straightforward crystal preparation that allows to preserve the spectrometer resolution and spectrometer efficiency. Application of the spectrometer for time-resolved resonant inelastic x-ray scattering and single-shot x-ray emission spectroscopy is demonstrated.

A Von Hamos X-Ray Spectrometer Based on a Segmented-Type Diffraction Crystal for Single-Shot X-Ray Emission Spectroscopy and Time-Resolved Resonant Inelastic X-Ray Scattering Studies

In situ hard X-ray quick RIXS to probe dynamic changes in the electronic structure of functional materials

The design and performance of a high-resolution transmission-type X-ray spectrometer for use in the 15-26 keV energy range at synchrotron light sources is reported. Monte Carlo X-ray-tracing simulations were performed to optimize the performance of the transmission-type spectrometer, based on the DuMond geometry, for use at the Super X-ray absorption beamline of the Swiss Light Source at the Paul Scherrer Institute. This spectrometer provides an instrumental energy resolution of 3.5 eV for X-ray emission lines around 16 keV and 12.5 eV for emission lines at 26 keV, which is comparable to the natural linewidths of the K and L X-ray transitions in the covered energy range. First experimental data are presented and compared with results of the Monte Carlo X-ray simulations.
