Journal ArticleDOI
The severe hailstorm in southwest Germany on 28 July 2013: characteristics, impacts and meteorological conditions
Michael Kunz,Ulrich Blahak,Jan Handwerker,Manuel Schmidberger,Heinz Jürgen Punge,Susanna Mohr,Elody Fluck,Kris M. Bedka +7 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the creation, temporal evolution, and effects of the most severe supercell that day by considering and merging radar and satellite data, eyewitness reports, insurance loss data, and numerical model studies.
Journal ArticleDOI
Hail statistics for Germany derived from single-polarization radar data
TL;DR: In this article, the authors suggest a reasonable method by which to estimate hail signals from 3D radar reflectivity measured by conventional single-polarization radars between 2005 and 2011, and evaluate the radar-derived hail days with loss data from a building and an agricultural insurance company.
Journal ArticleDOI
The role of large-scale dynamics in an exceptional sequence of severe thunderstorms in Europe May–June 2018
Susanna Mohr,Jannik Wilhelm,Jan Wandel,Michael Kunz,Raphael Portmann,Heinz Jürgen Punge,Manuel Schmidberger,Julian F. Quinting,Christian M. Grams +8 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors found that more than 50% of lightning strikes can be linked to a nearby cut-off low or positive potential vorticity (PV) filament.
