Journal ArticleDOI
PROLONGED INTRAUTERINE CONTRACEPTION: A SEVEN-YEAR RANDOMIZED STUDY OF THE LEVONORGESTREL 20 mcg/DAY (LNg 20) AND THE COPPER T380 Ag IUDS
Irving Sivin,Janet Stern,Elsimar Metzker Coutinho,Carlos E.R. Mattos,Sayed El Mahgoub,Soledad Diaz,Margarita Pavez,Francisco J. Alvarez,Vivian Brache,Francisco Thevenin,Juan José del Coz Díaz,Anibal Faundes,Margarita Díaz,Terence McCarthy,Daniel R. Mishell,Donna Shoupe +15 more
TL;DR: A levonorgestrel-releasing IUD and the Copper T 380Ag IUD were in randomized comparison for seven years in five clinics, representing the most effective reversible contraceptive methods yet studied in long-term randomized trials.
Journal ArticleDOI
Pituitary-ovarian function following the standard levonorgestrel emergency contraceptive dose or a single 0.75-mg dose given on the days preceding ovulation.
Horacio B. Croxatto,Vivian Brache,Margarita Pavez,Leila Cochon,M. L. Forcelledo,F. Alvarez,Rebeca Massai,Anibal Faundes,A.M. Salvatierra +8 more
TL;DR: In conclusion, LNG can disrupt the ovulatory process in 93% of cycles treated when the diameter of the dominant follicle is between 12 and 17 mm, and the present data suggest that half the dose may be as effective as the standard dose.
Journal ArticleDOI
Long-term contraception with the levonorgestrel 20 mcg/day (LNg 20) and the Copper T 380Ag intrauterine devices: A five-year randomized study
Irving Sivin,Sayed El Mahgoub,Terence McCarthy,Daniel R. Mishell,Donna Shoupe,Francisco J. Alvarez,Vivian Brache,Elvira Jimenez,Juan José del Coz Díaz,Anibal Faundes,Margarita Díaz,Elsimar Metzker Coutinho,Carlos E.R. Mattos,Soledad Diaz,Margarita Pavez,Janet Stern +15 more
TL;DR: These two intrauterine devices are the most effective long-term, reversible IUDs yet reported in the literature and no other contraceptive methods have exhibited such low long- term pregnancy rates in randomized comparative trials.
Journal ArticleDOI
A five-year clinical trial of levonorgestrel silastic implants (Norplant™)
TL;DR: From the second through the sixth year of use, the implants delivered a constant 30 micrograms per day of levonorgestrel to the subjects, and even after six years 57% of the original steroid content remained in the capsules.
Journal ArticleDOI
The performance of levonorgestrel rod and Norplant contraceptive implants: a 5 year randomized study
Irving Sivin,Italo Campodonico,Orawan Kiriwat,Pentti Holma,Soledad Diaz,Livia Wan,Arijit Biswas,O. A. C. Viegas,K. El Din Abdalla,Manee Piya Anant,Margarita Pavez,Janet Stern +11 more
TL;DR: With these contraceptives indistinguishable in performance except for ease and speed of removal, LNG rod implants appear to be preferable to Norplant for use through 5 years by virtue of relative ease of removal.
