Impact of Zinc Supplementation on Morbidity From Diarrhea and Respiratory Infections Among Rural Guatemalan Children
TL;DR: The large impact of zinc supplementation on diarrhea incidence suggests that young, rural Guatemalan children may be zinc deficient and that zinc supplementation may be an effective intervention to improve their health and growth.
Zinc Supplementation Affects the Activity Patterns of Rural Guatemalan
Margaret E. Bentley,Laura E. Caulfield,Malathi Ram,Maria Claudia Santizo,Elena Hurtado,Juan A Rivera,Marie T. Ruel,Kenneth H. Brown +7 more
TL;DR: Zinc deficiency has been associated with growth deficits, reduced dietary intake and appetite, and has been hypothesized to result in reduced activity, and this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study examined whether 10 mg of oral zinc as zinc sulfate, given daily for up to 7 mo, affected activity patterns of 85 Guatemalan infants recruited at 6-9 mo of age.
Journal ArticleDOI
Zinc Supplementation Affects the Activity Patterns of Rural Guatemalan Infants

TL;DR: In this article, a double-blind, placebo-controlled study examined whether 10 mg of oral zinc as zinc sulfate, given daily for up to 7 mo, affected activity patterns of 85 Guatemalan infants recruited at 6-9 mo of age.
Journal ArticleDOI
Zinc Supplementation Improves the Growth of Stunted Rural Guatemalan Infants
TL;DR: It is concluded that zinc supplementation of these rural Guatemalan infants during 6.9 mo increased accretion of fat-free mass and enhanced the linear growth of those who were stunted at baseline and achieved larger and more generalized effects on physical growth.
Journal ArticleDOI
Experiences and Lessons Learned in Developing and Implementing a Population-Based Nutrition and Health Surveillance System in Guatemala 2011-2021.
Mireya Palmieri,Rafael Flores-Ayala,Karla Mesarina,Dora Inés Mazariegos,Carolina Martinez,Baudilio López,Maria Claudia Santizo,Ralph D. Whitehead,O. Yaw Addo,J Javier Aponte,Eugenia De León Quiñónez,Manuel Sagastume,Maria Elena Jefferds +12 more
TL;DR: This population-based nutrition surveillance system prototype with complex sampling was designed and tested in 5 Guatemalan Highland departments in 2011 and can serve as a useful model for others.
