A critical review of mid- to late-Holocene sea-level fluctuations on the eastern Brazilian coastline

We assess the relationship between temperature and global sea-level (GSL) variability over the Common Era through a statistical metaanalysis of proxy relative sea-level reconstructions and tide-gauge data. GSL rose at 0.1 ± 0.1 mm/y (2σ) over 0-700 CE. A GSL fall of 0.2 ± 0.2 mm/y over 1000-1400 CE is associated with ∼ 0.2 °C global mean cooling. A significant GSL acceleration began in the 19th century and yielded a 20th century rise that is extremely likely (probability [Formula: see text]) faster than during any of the previous 27 centuries. A semiempirical model calibrated against the GSL reconstruction indicates that, in the absence of anthropogenic climate change, it is extremely likely ([Formula: see text]) that 20th century GSL would have risen by less than 51% of the observed [Formula: see text] cm. The new semiempirical model largely reconciles previous differences between semiempirical 21st century GSL projections and the process model-based projections summarized in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's Fifth Assessment Report.

Holocene sedimentary systems on continental shelves

The uplift of rocks above sea level on the Earth's surface over geologic time produces material that can be altered into soils and sediments by weathering processes. Over time, a fraction of sediments are sequestered in ocean basins, with most of it stored in the coastal margin. Sediments produced from weathering of igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks are transported primarily to the oceans through the world's river systems. The storage of organic matter in marine sediments is largely dependent upon the amount of early diagenesis (processes that alter the structure, texture, and mineralogy of a sediment, turning it progressively into solid hard rock; early diagenesis occurs immediately after deposition or burial of the sediment) that occurs in the upper sediments, which is controlled largely by the “quality” of organic detrital inputs and redox conditions of the sedimentary environment.

Geochemistry of Marine Sediments

A regional marine reservoir correction ( Δ R) of 33 24 14C yr for southern Brazil was obtained from 6 marine

shell samples collected in the states of Santa Catarina and Paran. This work also presents a Δ R estimation of 8 17 14C yr

for the southern and southeastern Brazilian coast from the states of Rio de Janeiro to Santa Catarina, obtained by including 7

ages published in previous works. The high variability of R in modern and Holocene samples from the Brazilian coast is also

discussed.

Reservoir effect of the southern and southeastern Brazilian coast

The aim of the present article is to present the forms of occupation and use of the coastal area of Parana, bringing the fundamental descriptive elements, but also trying to research some conditional and explicative factors, as well as noticing the present tendencies. The main current forms of coastal land use in Parana are related to harbors, fishing, tourism and the conservation of the present ecosystems and their biodiversity. In order to know its origin and comprehend its current form, it’s presented the historic of the region and shown data which characterize and give dimension the four coastal land uses just mentioned above. From this information, the geomorphologic conditionals of these uses are analyzed, as well as their consequences, in terms of conflicts and tendencies. Finally, there is presented basic data of the populational dynamic, understood as a reflex or expression of the economic dynamic which controls the occupation of the space, and the appropriation and use of the resources. This way, this work tries to understand the dialectic between the natural conditions and the historical processes which determine the configuration of the social space.

A ocupação e o uso do solo no litoral paranaense: condicionantes, conflitos e tendências

The Holocene Barrier Systems of Paranaguá and Northern Santa Catarina Coasts, Southern Brazil

The 14 C datations are one of the main tools to reconstruct paleo-sea levels and to understand the Quaternary barriers evolution. This paper discusses the significance of 33 14 C dated samples on paleo-sea level reconstruction and in the interpretation of Upper Pleistocene and Holocene barrier evolution in the State of Parana . We have concluded that: (a) it is unlikely that humic and fulvic acids are influencing the dating of wood samples from sediments impregnated with organic matter; (b) in situ reef remains, composed mainly of vermetid tubes of Petaloconchus (Macrophragma) varians , are the most precise and reliable paleo-sea level indicators found in the coast of Parana, showing a margin of error around ±1,0 m; (c) the height of the top of the shell banks, composed mainly of Anomalocardia brasiliana and containing abundant shells in live position, indicates a paleo-sea level equal or higher than the mean sea level during the organisms’ lifetime; (d) the interpretation of paleo-sea level through composed indicators provide only maximum ages because the dated-sample could be older than the sedimentary structure used to determine paleo-sea level; (e) the marine paleo-sea level indicators suggest that, during the Late Pleistocene, the sea reached > 4.0 m above present sea level; (f) dating of vermetid tubes indicates that the maximum Holocene sea level on the Parana coast occurred between 5370 and 4630 years B.P.; (g) the Holocene high maximum was about 3.5-3.6 ± 1.0 m; (h) after the maximum, the sea level gradually dropped, but the possibility of the occurrence of decimeter oscillations is not rejected; (i) the paleo-sea level inferred from mollusk banks, mainly composed of Anomalocardia brasiliana, and composed indicators, such as sedimentary structures associated with transported shells and wood fragments, agree with paleo-sea levels inferred from vermetid tubes on the Parana coast.
