The embedded systems world has radically changed since the first Embedded Systems Design Master studies were proposed. The spectrum of application areas has increased and the whole industrial ecosystem is changed, having SMEs emerged as major players. For these reasons, it becomes mandatory to reconsider the competences and capacities that should be provided in a Master of Science Program addressing Embedded Systems Design, so as to meet new and diverse requests that come from job market and prospective employers. In this paper, we present the study we carried out to outline the revised professional profile for young Embedded Systems Designers, and we report the results of our exploration. To infer the competence of an ideal candidate, we carried out two experiments: we analyzed the competences listed in posted job offers and we interviewed a number of potential employers. Results obtained analyzing the collected data, demonstrate the importance of soft skills such as teamwork and communication, and confirm that programming, networking, real time and system architecture know-how are in demand. Our results are an important starting point for updating embedded systems design curricula.

Embedded systems education: job market expectations

An overview of the key challenges that are faced during teaching of embedded systems (ES) in electronic engineering context is given in the paper. The study of the last three years final bachelor projects defended in electronic engineering (EE) branch at Kaunas university of technology, Telecommunications and Electronics Faculty is conducted. The goal of the study was to summarize what ES related tools and solutions students do utilize in their projects and how professional they are in their reports. The intention of this analysis is not only to reveal the extent of ES penetration of EE field but also to estimate the correlation between tools and technologies taught and really selected by students in their final qualification proof project. The results can among other issues be used to estimate the success of the group of courses targeting ES design.

Challenges of Embedded Systems Teaching in Electronic Engineering Studies

The need for professional programmers in embedded applications has become critical for industry growth This need has increased the popularity of embedded software design courses, which are resource-intensive and space-limited in traditional real lab-based instruction To overcome geographic and time barriers in enhancing practical skills that students require for embedded software design, this paper presents a remote multiuser platform designed to allow students to experiment with embedded systems “anytime” and “anywhere” through the “always open” lab (3A) The open 3A Multiuser Lab (3AML) integrates open source and network address translation (NAT) service techniques to offer a low-cost and efficient experimental environment for students The current study achieves the educational goals of training students to apply and integrate embedded software programming by combining teaching methodology and the proposed open 3AML aids In addition to describing the various experimental stations of the open platform and the students' project achievements, this work also discusses the campus-wide teaching assessment results and the satisfaction survey of the learning platform with students

Learning Embedded Software Design in an Open 3A Multiuser Laboratory

Embedded systems are becoming very common and meantime create a high demand for hardware and software engineer to support the development of IT. The higher education institutions are facing the need to update their embedded system syllabus. In this paper, we will share our experiences in the development of an undergraduate embedded systems course. This paper describes the design, implementation and teaching style of Application & Principle of Embedded System course in Department of Electrical Engineering, Beijing Institute of Technology. The paper also presents the challenges encountered due to broad knowledge background and how to achieve the right balance between theory and practice. We also introduce how co-operation between BIT and INTEL in Embedded System Joint Lab.

Research and Practice in Undergraduate Embedded System Course

In the fifteen years since the first Embedded Systems Design Master studies were proposed the embedded systems world has radically changed. The spectrum of application areas has increased beyond any expectation, and the increasing presence of embedded systems in the physical world has led to "cyber-physical systems." Devices tend to become a commodity in many cases, while sensors and IPs acquire a larger share of the market. The whole industrial ecosystem is changing as well, with "application" companies becoming increasingly present and SMEs emerging as major players. It becomes mandatory to reconsider the competences and capacities that should be provided in a Master of Science course oriented to Embedded Systems Design, so as to meet new and diverse requests that come from job market and prospective employers.Within the frame of the Nano-Tera Swiss Federal program (www.nano-tera.ch), the educational project Future Embedded Systems Education (FESTE) aimed at identifying requests coming from the job market, so as to outline the renewed professional profile for young Embedded Systems Designers. The results indicate that programming, networking, real time and system architecture know-how combined with soft skills such as teamwork and communication are in demand and frequently come under disguised names such as automation or control engineering.
