Journal ArticleDOI
The phylum Cnidaria: A review of phylogenetic patterns and diversity 300 years after Linnaeus
Marymegan Daly,Mercer R. Brugler,Paulyn Cartwright,Allen Gilbert Collins,Michael N Dawson,Daphne G. Fautin,Catherine S. McFadden,Dennis M. Opresko,Estefanía Rodríguez,Sandra L. Romano,Joel L. Stake +10 more
TL;DR: This work contrasts the Linnaean perspective on cnidarian diversity with the modern, phylogenetic perspective, and details diversity at the family level, providing phylogenetic context where possible.
Journal ArticleDOI
Phylogenomic Analyses Support Traditional Relationships within Cnidaria.
Felipe Zapata,Freya E. Goetz,Stephen A. Smith,Mark Howison,Stefan Siebert,Samuel H. Church,Steven M. Sanders,Cheryl Lewis Ames,Cheryl Lewis Ames,Catherine S. McFadden,Marymegan Daly,Allen Gilbert Collins,Steven H. D. Haddock,Casey W. Dunn,Paulyn Cartwright +14 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors used transcriptome data from 15 newly-sequenced species in combination with 26 publicly available genomes and transcriptomes to assess phylogenetic relationships among major cnidarian lineages.
Journal ArticleDOI
Hidden among sea anemones: the first comprehensive phylogenetic reconstruction of the order Actiniaria (Cnidaria, Anthozoa, Hexacorallia) reveals a novel group of hexacorals.
Estefanía Rodríguez,Marcos S. Barbeitos,Marcos S. Barbeitos,Mercer R. Brugler,Louise M. Crowley,Alejandro Grajales,Luciana C. Gusmão,Verena Häussermann,Abigail J. Reft,Marymegan Daly +9 more
TL;DR: Based on the comprehensive phylogeny, a new formal higher-level classification is proposed for Actiniaria composed of only two suborders, Anenthemonae and EnthemonAE and erect subgroups within these two newly-erected suborders.
Journal ArticleDOI
Systematics of the Hexacorallia (Cnidaria: Anthozoa)
TL;DR: It is found that orders Actiniaria, Antipatharia, Ceriantharia, Corallimorpharia, Scleractinia, and Zoanthidea are monophyletic; CorallIMorpharia is most closely related to Scleractsinia.
Journal ArticleDOI
Gastrulation in the cnidarian Nematostella vectensis occurs via invagination not ingression
TL;DR: Endodermal cells constrict their apices, adopting bottle-like morphologies especially pronounced adjacent to the blastopore lip during gastrulation, and injection of splice-blocking morpholinos to Nematostella snail genes does not result in a phenotype despite dramatically reducing wild-type transcript.
