Perovskite solar cells combine high carrier mobilities with long carrier lifetimes and high radiative efficiencies. Despite this, full devices suffer from significant nonradiative recombination losses, limiting their VOC to values well below the Shockley–Queisser limit. Here, recent advances in understanding nonradiative recombination in perovskite solar cells from picoseconds to steady state are presented, with an emphasis on the interfaces between the perovskite absorber and the charge transport layers. Quantification of the quasi‐Fermi level splitting in perovskite films with and without attached transport layers allows to identify the origin of nonradiative recombination, and to explain the VOC of operational devices. These measurements prove that in state‐of‐the‐art solar cells, nonradiative recombination at the interfaces between the perovskite and the transport layers is more important than processes in the bulk or at grain boundaries. Optical pump‐probe techniques give complementary access to the interfacial recombination pathways and provide quantitative information on transfer rates and recombination velocities. Promising optimization strategies are also highlighted, in particular in view of the role of energy level alignment and the importance of surface passivation. Recent record perovskite solar cells with low nonradiative losses are presented where interfacial recombination is effectively overcome—paving the way to the thermodynamic efficiency limit.

A History and Perspective of Non-Fullerene Electron Acceptors for Organic Solar Cells

Consolidated tables showing an extensive listing of the highest independently confirmed efficiencies for solar cells and modules are presented. Guidelines for inclusion of results into these tables are outlined, and new entries since January 2022 are reviewed. An appendix describing temporary electrical contacting of large-area solar cells approaches and terminology is also included.

Organic semiconductors require an energetic offset in order to photogenerate free charge carriers efficiently, owing to their inability to effectively screen charges. This is vitally important in order to achieve high power conversion efficiencies in organic solar cells. Early heterojunction-based solar cells were limited to relatively modest efficiencies (<4%) owing to limitations such as poor exciton dissociation, limited photon harvesting, and high recombination losses. The development of the bulk heterojunction (BHJ) has significantly overcome these issues, resulting in dramatic improvements in organic photovoltaic performance, now exceeding 18% power conversion efficiencies. Here, the design and engineering strategies used to develop the optimal bulk heterojunction for solar-cell, photodetector, and photocatalytic applications are discussed. Additionally, the thermodynamic driving forces in the creation and stability of the bulk heterojunction are presented, along with underlying photophysics in these blends. Finally, new opportunities to apply the knowledge accrued from BHJ solar cells to generate free charges for use in promising new applications are discussed.

The Bulk Heterojunction in Organic Photovoltaic, Photodetector, and Photocatalytic Applications.

The selectivity of electrodes of solar cells is a critical factor that can limit the overall efficiency. If the selectivity of an electrode is not sufficient both electrons and holes recombine at its surface. In materials with poor transport properties such as in organic solar cells, these surface recombination currents are accompanied by large gradients of the quasi-Fermi energies as the driving force. Experimental results from current–voltage characteristics, advanced photo- and electroluminescence as well as charge extraction of three different photoactive materials are shown and compared to drift-diffusion simulations. It can be concluded that in cases of electrodes with reduced selectivity the decrease of the open-circuit voltage can be divided into two distinct contributions, the reduction of the overall steady-state charge carrier density and the gradients of the quasi-Fermi energies. The results clearly show that for photoactive layers with poor transport properties, the gradient of the quasi-Fermi energy in the vicinity of the contact is the main contribution to the loss in open-circuit voltage. For imbalanced mobilities, this gives rise to the phenomenon that it is more challenging to realize a selective contact for the less mobile charge carrier, i.e., the hole contact in most organic solar cells.

On the Impact of Contact Selectivity and Charge Transport on the Open‐Circuit Voltage of Organic Solar Cells

Simple organic molecules with permanent dipole moments – amino acids and heterocycles – have been successfully employed in bulk-heterojunction organic solar cells as interlayer between photoactive material and electron contact. A large increase of open-circuit voltage and fill factor can be observed for four different polymers as donor material in the photoactive layer. A combination of current–voltage curves, scanning Kelvin-probe atomic force microscopy, ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy, and electroluminescence measurements as well as numerical simulations are carried out to clarify in detail the underlying mechanisms. All results fully confirm the hypothesis that the main effect is an accumulation of electrons and a depletion of holes in the photoactive layer in the vicinity of the electron contact induced by a decrease of its effective work function. Further, density functional theory calculations and literature reports of the energy levels of the dipole molecules strongly suggest that the charge carriers tunnel through the thin dipole layer which does however not limit the current. This represents a versatile, simple, and cheap method to realize highly selective contacts which may also be beneficial for other types of solar cells and devices where contact selectivity is crucial.

How Molecules with Dipole Moments Enhance the Selectivity of Electrodes in Organic Solar Cells - A Combined Experimental and Theoretical Approach

Generation and recombination of electrons and holes in organic solar cells occurs via charge transfer states located at the donor/acceptor interface. The energy of these charge transfer states is a crucial factor for the attainable open-circuit voltage and its correct determination is thus of utmost importance for a detailed understanding of such devices. This work reports on drastic changes of electroluminescence spectra of bulk heterojunction organic solar cells upon variation of the absorber layer thickness. It is shown that optical thin-film effects have a large impact on optical out-coupling of luminescence radiation for devices made from different photoactive materials, in configurations with and without indium tin oxide. A scattering matrix approach is presented which accurately reproduces the observed effects and thus delivers the radiative recombination spectra corrected for the wavelength-dependent out-coupling. This approach is proven to enable the correct determination of charge transfer state energies.

Correct determination of charge transfer state energy from luminescence spectra in organic solar cells.

Ultralow friction (coefficient of friction μ ≈ 0.005) is observed when two steel surfaces are brought into sliding contact in the presence of a particular 1,3-diketone lubricant (1-(4-ethyl phenyl) nonane-1,3-dione). We investigate the friction process of such a system both experimentally and theoretically and show that the superlubricity is caused by a novel, unique mechanism: The formation of iron-1,3-diketonato complexes during frictional contact leads to a self-limiting, tribochemical polishing process while at the same time a self-assembled monolayer of the diketone is formed on the employed steel surfaces. This polishing process reduces the contact pressure and at the same time leads to formation of a boundary lubricant layer. During sliding the system transits from the original boundary lubrication regime toward hydrodynamic lubrication. Conductivity measurements across the friction gap during sliding show that the lubricant layer present in the gap between the two shearing surfaces is a only few 10 nanometers thick, so that the molecules experience under typical sliding conditions shear rates of a few 10(6) s(-1). Simulations show that under such strong shear the molecules become strongly oriented in the friction gap and the effective viscosity in sliding direction is significantly reduced so that the system is in the thin film lubrication regime and superlubricity is observed. The results of the experiments suggest that such diketones are promising lubricants to achieve a decrease of energy loss and frictional damage in steel based mechanical devices.
