How much Northern Hemisphere precipitation is associated with extratropical cyclones

TL;DR: In this paper, an objective feature tracking algorithm is used to locate cyclones and the precipitation associated with these cyclones is quantified to establish their contribution to total precipitation, and the most intensely precipitating 10% of storms contribute over 20% of total storm associated precipitation in DJF whereas they provide less than 15% of this total in JJA.

Southern Ocean albedo, inter-hemispheric energy transports and the double ITCZ: global impacts of biases in a coupled model

TL;DR: In this paper, targeted albedo corrections are applied in the Southern Ocean to explore the dynamical response to artificially reducing these biases, but no improvement is observed in the double ITCZ bias or atmospheric cross-equatorial energy transport, a finding which supports other recent work.

Extratropical cyclones and the projected decline of winter Mediterranean precipitation in the CMIP5 models

TL;DR: In this article, the authors quantified the impact on winter Mediterranean precipitation due to changes in extratropical cyclones in 17 CMIP5 climate models and showed that the projected Mediterranean precipitation reduction in winter is strongly related to a decrease in the number of Mediterranean cyclones.
