Journal ArticleDOI
NZB mouse system for production of monoclonal antibodies to weak bacterial antigens: isolation of an IgG antibody to the polysaccharide capsules of Escherichia coli K1 and group B meningococci.
TL;DR: Comparison of the humoral immune responses of normal BALB/c mice and autoimmune NZB mice to hyperimmunization showed that, although both strains mounted a weak meningococcal B polysaccharide-specific IgM response, only the NZB strain mounted an IgG response.
Journal ArticleDOI
Molecular characterization of eukaryotic polysialyltransferase-1.
Matthias Eckhardt,Martina Mühlenhoff,Andrea Bethe,Jaap Koopman,Matthias Frosch,Rita Gerardy-Schahn +5 more
TL;DR: The data represent convincing evidence that the polycondensation of α–2,8–linked sialic acids in mammals is the result of a single enzymatic activity and provide a new basis for studying the functional role of PSA in neuro- and tumour biology.
Journal ArticleDOI
Predicted strain coverage of a meningococcal multicomponent vaccine (4CMenB) in Europe: a qualitative and quantitative assessment
Ulrich Vogel,Muhamed-Kheir Taha,Julio A. Vázquez,Jamie Findlow,Heike Claus,Paola Stefanelli,Dominique A. Caugant,Paula Kriz,Raquel Abad,Stefania Bambini,Anna Carannante,Ala Eddine Deghmane,Cecilia Fazio,Matthias Frosch,Giacomo Frosi,Stefanie Gilchrist,Marzia Monica Giuliani,Eva Hong,Morgan Ledroit,Pietro Giorgio Lovaglio,Jay Lucidarme,Martin Musilek,Alessandro Muzzi,Jan Oksnes,Fabio Rigat,Luca Orlandi,Maria Stella,Danielle Thompson,Mariagrazia Pizza,Rino Rappuoli,Davide Serruto,Maurizio Comanducci,Giuseppe Boccadifuoco,John J. Donnelly,Duccio Medini,Ray Borrow +35 more
TL;DR: MATS analysis showed that a multicomponent vaccine could protect against a substantial proportion of invasive MenB strains isolated in Europe, however, monitoring of antigen expression will be needed in the future.
Journal ArticleDOI
Capsule phase variation in Neisseria meningitidis serogroup B by slipped-strand mispairing in the polysialyltransferase gene (siaD): correlation with bacterial invasion and the outbreak of meningococcal disease.
Sven Hammerschmidt,Astrid Müller,H Sillmann,Martina Mühlenhoff,Ray Borrow,A Fox,J. P. M. Van Putten,J. P. M. Van Putten,W D Zollinger,Rita Gerardy-Schahn,Matthias Frosch +10 more
TL;DR: A mechanism of capsular polysaccharide phase variation in Neisseria meningitidis and correlation between capsule phase variation and bacterial invasion and the out‐break of meningococcal disease is described.
Journal ArticleDOI
The complete genome sequence of the carcinogenic bacterium Helicobacter hepaticus
Sebastian Suerbaum,Christine Josenhans,Torsten Sterzenbach,Bernd Drescher,Petra Brandt,Monica Bell,Marcus Dröge,Berthold Fartmann,Hans-Peter Fischer,Zhongming Ge,Andrea Hörster,Rudi Holland,Kerstin Klein,Jochen König,Ludwig Macko,George L. Mendz,Gerald Nyakatura,David B. Schauer,Zeli Shen,Jacqueline Weber,Matthias Frosch,James G. Fox +21 more
TL;DR: The complete genome sequence of H. hepaticus ATCC51449 is reported, suggesting a role of HHGI1 in pathogenicity and several genomic islets whose G+C content differs from the rest of the genome.
