Journal ArticleDOI
Morbidity and mortality among a cohort of human immunodeficiency virus type 1-infected and uninfected pregnant women and their infants from Malawi, Zambia, and Tanzania.
David Chilongozi,Lei Wang,Lillian B. Brown,Taha E. Taha,Megan Valentine,Lynda Emel,Moses Sinkala,Moses Sinkala,George Kafulafula,Ramadhani A. Noor,Jennifer S. Read,Elizabeth R. Brown,Robert L. Goldenberg,Irving F. Hoffman +13 more
TL;DR: The high mortality among infants with early HIV-1 infection supports access to HIV- 1 diagnostics and appropriate early treatment for all infants of HIV-2-infected mothers and the significant association between stage of maternal HIV-3 infection and infant mortality supports routine CD4 counts at the time of prenatal HIV-0 testing.
Journal ArticleDOI
The HPTN 024 Study: The efficacy of antibiotics to prevent chorioamnionitis and preterm birth
Robert L. Goldenberg,Anthony Mwatha,Jennifer S. Read,Samuel Adeniyi-Jones,Moses Sinkala,Moses Sinkala,Gernard Msmanga,Francis Martinson,Irving F. Hoffman,Wafaie W. Fawzi,Megan Valentine,Lynda Emel,Elizabeth R. Brown,Victor Mudenda,Taha E. Taha +14 more
TL;DR: Despite reducing the rate of vaginal infections, the antibiotic regimen used in this study did not reduce the rates of preterm birth, increase the time to delivery, or increase BWT.
Journal ArticleDOI
Genital tract infections among HIV-infected pregnant women in Malawi, Tanzania and Zambia.
S. Aboud,Gernard I. Msamanga,Jennifer S. Read,Anthony Mwatha,Ying Qing Chen,Dara Potter,Megan Valentine,Usha Sharma,I Hoffmann,Taha E. Taha,Robert L. Goldenberg,Wafaie W. Fawzi +11 more
TL;DR: Differences in burdens and risk factors call for enhanced interventions for identification of genital tract infections among HIV-infected women from African sites.
Journal ArticleDOI
Live-Attenuated Respiratory Syncytial Virus Vaccine Candidate With Deletion of RNA Synthesis Regulatory Protein M2-2 is Highly Immunogenic in Children.
Elizabeth J. McFarland,Ruth A. Karron,Petronella Muresan,Coleen K. Cunningham,Megan Valentine,Charlotte Perlowski,Bhagvanji Thumar,Devasena Gnanashanmugam,George K. Siberry,Elizabeth Schappell,Emily Barr,Vivian Rexroad,Ram Yogev,Stephen A. Spector,Mariam Aziz,Nehali Patel,Mikhaela Cielo,Cindy Luongo,Peter L. Collins,Ursula J. Buchholz +19 more
TL;DR: Eight of 19 vaccinees versus 2 of 9 placebo recipients had substantially increased RSV antibody titers after the RSV season without medically attended RSV disease, indicating anamnestic vaccine responses to wild-type RSV without significant illness.
Journal ArticleDOI
Predictors of stillbirth in sub-saharan Africa.
Benjamin H. Chi,Lei Wang,Jennifer S. Read,Taha E. Taha,Moses Sinkala,Elizabeth R. Brown,Megan Valentine,Francis Martinson,Robert L. Goldenberg +8 more
TL;DR: In this large cohort, HIV infection was not associated with increased stillbirth risk, and further work is needed to elucidate the relationship between chorioamnionitis and stillbirth in African populations.
