Journal ArticleDOI
The protective effect of melatonin on renal ischemia-reperfusion injury in the rat.
TL;DR: The results revealed that I/R induced nephrotoxicity, as evidenced by increases in BUN and creatinine levels at each time point, was reversed by melatonin treatment, indicating that renal injury involves free radical formation.
Journal ArticleDOI
Silymarin, the Antioxidant Component of Silybum marianum, Prevents Sepsis-Induced Acute Lung and Brain Injury
Hale Z. Toklu,Tugba Tunali Akbay,Ayliz Velioğlu-Öğünç,Feriha Ercan,Nursal Gedik,Meral Keyer-Uysal,Göksel Şener +6 more
TL;DR: Silymarin, like NAC, reduced sepsis-induced remote organ injury, at least in part, through its ability to balance oxidant-antioxidant status, to inhibit neutrophil infiltration, and to regulate the release of inflammatory mediators.
Journal ArticleDOI
Long-term administration of aqueous garlic extract (AGE) alleviates liver fibrosis and oxidative damage induced by biliary obstruction in rats.
Nursal Gedik,Levent Kabasakal,Özer Şehirli,Feriha Ercan,Serap Sirvanci,Meral Keyer-Uysal,Göksel Şener +6 more
TL;DR: Since AGE administration alleviated the BDL-induced oxidative injury of the liver and improved the hepatic structure and function, it seems likely that AGE with its antioxidant and antifibrotic properties, may be of potential therapeutic value in protecting the liver fibrosis and oxidative injury due to biliary obstruction.
Journal ArticleDOI
Melatonin improves oxidative organ damage in a rat model of thermal injury
TL;DR: Treatment of rats with melatonin (10mg/kg) significantly elevated the reduced GSH levels while it decreased MDA and PO levels as well as MPO activity.
Journal ArticleDOI
The protective effect of melatonin on cisplatin nephrotoxicity.
Göksel Şener,Handan Şatıroğlu,Levent Kabasakal,Serap Arbak,Susanne Öner,Feriha Ercan,Meral Keyer-Uysal +6 more
TL;DR: The present study suggests that melatonin may be of therapeutic benefit when used with CP, and elucidates the role of the antioxidant system in CP‐induced nephrotoxicity and the nephroprotection by melatonin.
