Solution combustion is an exciting phenomenon, which involves propagation of self-sustained exothermic reactions along an aqueous or sol–gel media. This process allows for the synthesis of a variety of nanoscale materials, including oxides, metals, alloys, and sulfides. This Review focuses on the analysis of new approaches and results in the field of solution combustion synthesis (SCS) obtained during recent years. Thermodynamics and kinetics of reactive solutions used in different chemical routes are considered, and the role of process parameters is discussed, emphasizing the chemical mechanisms that are responsible for rapid self-sustained combustion reactions. The basic principles for controlling the composition, structure, and nanostructure of SCS products, and routes to regulate the size and morphology of the nanoscale materials are also reviewed. Solution Combustion Synthesis of Nanoscale Materials

The development of advanced energy storage devices is at the forefront of research geared towards a sustainable future. Nanostructured materials are advantageous in offering huge surface to volume ratios, favorable transport features, and attractive physicochemical properties. They have been extensively explored in various fields of energy storage and conversion. This review is focused largely on the recent progress in nanostructured Mo-based electrode materials including molybdenum oxides (MoOx, 2 ≤ x ≤ 3), dichalconides (MoX2, X = S, Se), and oxysalts for rechargeable lithium/sodium-ion batteries, Mg batteries, and supercapacitors. Mo-based compounds including MoO2, MoO3, MoO3−y (0 < y < 1), MMoxOy (M = Fe, Co, Ni, Ca, Mn, Zn, Mg, or Cd; x = 1, y = 4; x = 3, y = 8), MoS2, MoSe2, (MoO2)2P2O7, LiMoO2, Li2MoO3, etc. possess multiple valence states and exhibit rich chemistry. They are very attractive candidates for efficient electrochemical energy storage systems because of their unique physicochemical properties, such as conductivity, mechanical and thermal stability, and cyclability. In this review, we aim to provide a systematic summary of the synthesis, modification, and electrochemical performance of nanostructured Mo-based compounds, as well as their energy storage applications in lithium/sodium-ion batteries, Mg batteries, and pseudocapacitors. The relationship between nanoarchitectures and electrochemical performances as well as the related charge-storage mechanism is discussed. Moreover, remarks on the challenges and perspectives of Mo-containing compounds for further development in electrochemical energy storage applications are proposed. This review sheds light on the sustainable development of advanced rechargeable batteries and supercapacitors with nanostructured Mo-based electrode materials.

Nanostructured Mo-based electrode materials for electrochemical energy storage

Binary transition metal oxides (BTMOs) possess higher reversible capacity, better structural stability and electronic conductivity, and have been widely studied to be novel electrode materials for supercapacitors. In this review, we present an extensive description of BTMO materials and the most commonly used synthetic methods. Furthermore, we review several notable BTMOs and their composites in application of supercapacitors. With the increasing attention for energy storage, more and more exciting results about BTMO materials will be reported in the future.

Binary metal oxide: advanced energy storage materials in supercapacitors

The search for faster, safer, and more efficient energy storage systems continues to inspire researchers to develop new energy storage materials with ultrahigh performance. Mesoporous nanostructures are interesting for supercapacitors because of their high surface area, controlled porosity, and large number of active sites, which promise the utilization of the full capacitance of active materials. Herein, highly ordered mesoporous CuCo2O4 nanowires have been synthesized by nanocasting from a silica SBA-15 template. These nanowires exhibit superior pseudocapacitance of 1210 F g–1 in the initial cycles. Electroactivation of the electrode in the subsequent 250 cycles causes a significant increase in capacitance to 3080 F g–1. An asymmetric supercapacitor composed of mesoporous CuCo2O4 nanowires for the positive electrode and activated carbon for the negative electrode demonstrates an ultrahigh energy density of 42.8 Wh kg–1 with a power density of 15 kW kg–1 plus excellent cycle life. Highly Ordered Mesoporous CuCo2O4 Nanowires, a Promising Solution for High-Performance Supercapacitors

The design and synthesis of metal oxide nanomaterials is one of the key steps for achieving highly efficient energy conversion and storage on an industrial scale. Solution combustion synthesis (SCS) is a time- and energy-saving method as compared with other routes, especially for the preparation of complex oxides which can be easily adapted for scale-up applications. This review summarizes the synthesis of various metal oxide nanomaterials and their applications for energy conversion and storage, including lithium-ion batteries, supercapacitors, hydrogen and methane production, fuel cells and solar cells. In particular, some novel concepts such as reverse support combustion, self-combustion of ionic liquids, and creation of oxygen vacancies are presented. SCS has some unique advantages such as its capability for in situ doping of oxides and construction of heterojunctions. The well-developed porosity and large specific surface area caused by gas evolution during the combustion process endow the resulting materials with exceptional properties. The relationship between the structural properties of the metal oxides studied and their performance is discussed. Finally, the conclusions and perspectives are briefly presented.

Solution combustion synthesis of metal oxide nanomaterials for energy storage and conversion

Nickel molybdate (α-NiMoO4) nanoparticles were prepared by a solution combustion synthesis (SCS) technique and, for the first time, were studied as a potential electrode material for supercapacitors. High specific capacitance (1517 F g−1) and energy density (52.7 W h Kg−1) were delivered by nano-α-NiMoO4 at a current density of 1.2 A g−1, due to the pseudocapacitive nature of the material.
