GABA(A) (gamma-aminobutyric acid type A) receptors mediate most of the 'fast' synaptic inhibition in the mammalian brain and are targeted by many clinically important drugs. Certain naturally occurring pregnane steroids can potently and specifically enhance GABA(A) receptor function in a nongenomic (direct) manner, and consequently have anxiolytic, analgesic, anticonvulsant, sedative, hypnotic and anaesthetic properties. These steroids not only act as remote endocrine messengers, but also can be synthesized in the brain, where they modify neuronal activity locally by modulating GABA(A) receptor function. Such 'neurosteroids' can influence mood and behaviour in various physiological and pathophysiological situations, and might contribute to the behavioural effects of psychoactive drugs.

The pathway leading from soluble and monomeric to hyperphosphorylated, insoluble and filamentous tau protein is at the centre of many human neurodegenerative diseases, collectively referred to as tauopathies. Dominantly inherited mutations in MAPT, the gene that encodes tau, cause forms of frontotemporal dementia and parkinsonism, proving that dysfunction of tau is sufficient to cause neurodegeneration and dementia. However, most cases of tauopathy are not inherited in a dominant manner. The first tau aggregates form in a few nerve cells in discrete brain areas. These become self propagating and spread to distant brain regions in a prion-like manner. The prevention of tau aggregation and propagation is the focus of attempts to develop mechanism-based treatments for tauopathies.

COMPOSE: Using temporal patterns for interpreting wearable sensor data with computer interpretable guidelines.

In the last decades, the use of Multi-Agent Systems (MAS) resulted in being the most relevant approach to foster the development of systems performing distributed reasoning, automated/autonomous actions, and regulating component interactions in unpredictable and uncertain scenarios. The scientific community provided numerous innovative contributions about resource and task allocation seeking for optimal/sub-optimal solutions. The adoption of MAS in CyberPhysical Systems (CPS) is producing outstanding results. However, in current MAS, the actual task execution is still delegated to traditional general-purpose scheduling algorithms running within the agent (local scheduler of behaviors). The main consequence is the incapability to enforce compliance with strict timing constraints (i.e., the impossibility of providing any guarantee about the system’s behavior in the worst-case scenario). Therefore, the adoption of MAS is hampered, excluding significant application scenarios such as safety-critical environments. This paper proposes the schedulability analysis of various task-sets, that are feasible using real-time schedulers, on top of traditional general-purpose solutions. In particular, the study of deadline-missing rate occurring in general-purpose setups, evaluated on an agent-based simulator developed on OMNET++, named MAXIM-GPRT, is presented. The obtained results strengthen the motivations for adopting and adapting real-time scheduling mechanisms as the local scheduler within agents.

Timing Reliability for Local Schedulers in Multi-Agent Systems.

Life expectancy is rising world wide thanks to the current advancement of medicine. Due to the fact that the population is growing old, also the incidence of chronic illnesses in the population is rising. For this reason, new paradigms of healthcare are being developed to achieve a better medical follow-up and also handle the rising costs. One approach that is proving successful is telemedicine, which focuses on decentralising the delivery of healthcare by means of new technologies based on network connectivity. One problem that rises in the definition of telemedicine systems is the one of security of medical data. In this paper we present our telemedicine system for monitoring Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM). We addressed the problem of securing the communication between the patients and the doctors. The result is a fully implemented telemedicine system for GDM that mitigates the risks associated with the most common malicious attacks directed to a distributed system. Electronic medical records (EMRs) are critical, highly sensitive private information in healthcare, and need to be frequently shared among peers. Blockchain provides a shared, immutable and transparent history of all the transactions to build applications with trustability, accountability and transparency. This provides a unique opportunity to develop a secure and trustable EMR data management and sharing system by using blockchain. We present our perspectives on blockchain-based healthcare data management. We implemented a framework for managing and sharing EMR data on cancer patient care that ensures privacy, security, availability, and fine-grained access control over EMR data.
