Methadone continuation versus forced withdrawal on incarceration in a combined US prison and jail: a randomised, open-label trial
Josiah D. Rich,Josiah D. Rich,Michelle McKenzie,Michelle McKenzie,Sarah Larney,Sarah Larney,Sarah Larney,John B. Wong,Liem Tran,Jennifer G. Clarke,Jennifer G. Clarke,Jennifer G. Clarke,Amanda Noska,Amanda Noska,Manasa Reddy,Manasa Reddy,Nickolas Zaller,Nickolas Zaller +17 more
TL;DR: It is shown that forced withdrawal from methadone on incarceration reduced the likelihood of prisoners re-engaging in methad one maintenance after their release, which could contribute to greater treatment engagement after release, and reduce the risk of death from overdose and risk behaviours.
Journal ArticleDOI
Attitudes and practices regarding the use of methadone in US state and federal prisons.
Josiah D. Rich,Amy Boutwell,David C. Shield,R. Garrett Key,Michelle McKenzie,Jennifer G. Clarke,Peter D. Friedmann +6 more
TL;DR: The results highlight the need to destigmatize the use of methadone in the incarcerated setting, expand access to Methadone during incarceration, and to improve linkage to methamphetamineadone treatment for opiate-dependent offenders who return to the community.

A Randomized Trial of Methadone Initiation Prior to Release from Incarceration
Michelle McKenzie,Nickolas Zaller,Samuel Dickman,Traci C. Green,Amisha Parihk,Peter D. Friedmann,Josiah D. Rich +6 more
TL;DR: Starting methadone maintenance treatment in the weeks prior to release from incarceration is a feasible and effective way to improve MMT access postrelease and to decrease relapse to opioid use.
