In addition to the often-cited advantages of using Arabidopsis thaliana as a model system in plant biological research (1), Arabidopsis has many additional characteristics that make it an attractive experimental organism for studying lea d (Pb) accumulation and tolerance in plants. These include its fortuitous familial relationship to many known metal hyperaccumulators (Brassicaceae), as well as similar Pbaccumulation patterns to most other plants. Using nutrient-agar plates, hydroponic culture, and Pb-contaminated soils as growth media, we found significant variation in Arabidopsis thaliana ecotypes in accumulation and tolerance of Pb. In addition, we have found that Pb accumulation is not obligatorily linked with Pb tolerance, suggesti ng that different genetic factors control these two processes. We also screened ethyl methanesulfonate-mutagenized M2 populations and identified several Pb-accumulating mutants. Current characterization of these mutants indicates that their phenotypes are likely due to alteration of general metal ion uptake or translocation processes since these mutants also accumulate many other metals in shoots. We expect that further characterization of the ecotypes and mutants will shed light on the basic genetic and physiological underpinnings of plant-based Pb remediation. 7. This study assessed the potential of bacteria (12 isolates), plants (16 forage grasses), and plant-bacteria associations (selected pairings) to remediate 2-chlorobenzoic acid (2CBA)-contaminated soil. Initially, grass viability was assessed in 2CBA-contaminated soil. Soil was contaminated wi th 2CBA, forage grasses were grown under growth chamber conditions for 42 or 60 d, and the 2CBA concentration in soil was determined by gas chromatography. Only five of 16 forage grasses grew in 2CBA-treated (816 mg/kg) soil. The stricter environmental regulations, encroachment of residential areas on wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), and increasing public expectations on privatized water companies have resulted in an increase in the number of public odor complaints during the last decades. Despite not being a direct cause of disease, long-term exposure to high-strength odorant emissions actually does negatively affect human health (e.g., causing nausea, headaches, respiratory problems). Therefore, the minimization and abatement of unpleasant odor emissions are becoming two of the major challenges for WWTP utilities worldwide. However, information regarding odor formation, sources, sampling, characterization, impact assessment, and control techniques is rather sparse in the literature. Therefore, there is a need for an integrated approach to odor assessment and management.

Odor Assessment and Management in Wastewater Treatment Plants: A Review

Nitrogen oxides (NOx) of environmental concern are nitrogen monoxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2). They are hazardous air pollutants that lead to the formation of acid rain and tropospheric ozone. Both pollutants are usually present simultaneously and are, therefore, called NOx. Another compound is N2O which is found in the stratosphere where it plays a role in the greenhouse effect. Concern for environmental and health issues coupled with stringent NOx emission standards generates a need for the development of efficient low-cost NOx abatement technologies. Under such circumstances, it becomes mandatory for each NOx-emitting industry or facility to opt for proper NOx control measures. Several techniques are available to control NOx emissions: selective catalytic reduction (SCR), selective non-catalytic reduction (SNCR), adsorption, scrubbing, and biological methods. Each process offers specific advantages and limitations. Since bioprocesses present many advantages over conventional technologies for flue gas cleaning, a lot of interest has recently been shown for these processes. This article reviews the major characteristics of conventional non-biological technologies and recent advances in the biological removal of NOx from flue gases based on the catalytic activity of either eucaryotes or procaryotes, ie nitrification, denitrification, the use of microalgae, and a combined physicochemical and biological process (BioDeNOx). Relatively uncomplicated design and simple operation and maintenance requirements make biological removal a good option for the control of NOx emissions in stationary sources. Bioprocesses for the removal of nitrogen oxides from polluted air

Ammonia emission to the atmosphere is an important environmental problem. A significant increase in ammonia emission is expected in automotive and energy production sectors in the near future. It is related to the spreading of technologies that use ammonia for NOx conversion in flue gases (e.g. DeNOx, DEF) and combustion of nitrogen rich fuels (e.g. biogas, biomass). Among the various methods of ammonia elimination from flue gases, its catalytic selective oxidation to dinitrogen seems to be the most promising one. Different types of catalytic systems active in selective ammonia oxidation are presented and discussed. Moreover, the possible mechanisms of ammonia oxidation and the concept of a bifunctional catalyst are discussed and analysed. Finally, future trends in these studies are suggested.

Activated carbon fiber (ACF) was used as the carrier for a biofilter and the removal characteristics of ammonia gas by the ACF biofilter seeded with night soil sludge on a laboratory-scale were investigated. After physical adsorption of the ammonia gas on the ACF at 0.59 g N kg−1 dry ACF, biological the removal of ammonia occurred. The removal capacity of the ammonia gradually increased and its complete removal was observed up to the load of 1.5 g N kg−1 dry ACF day−1 while the maximum removal capacity was 3.5 g N kg−1 dry ACF day−1. Based on a kinetic analysis, the maximum removal rate of ammonia, Vm, obtained was 8.4 g N kg−1 dry ACF day−1 and the saturation constant, Ks, was 26 ppm.

Ammonia Gas Removal Characteristics using Biofilter with Activated Carbon Fiber as a Carrier

The main purpose of the study was to isolate strains of bacteria capable of degrading hydrocarbons from contaminated mangroves and to investigate the ability of the isolated bacteria to degrade total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) in a microcosm model of an oily sludge. The potential use of these bacteria strains as environmental clean-up agents was tested by culturing them with six different polyaromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) compounds (phenothiazine, fluorene, fluoranthene, dibenzothiophene, phenanthrene, and pyrene). Six viable and culturable bacteria were isolated, and the 16S rDNA sequence for each was amplified using the primers 9F and 1510R. Sequence results were compared using the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) BLAST program and, combined with phenotypic and phylogenetic data, were used to identify three strains that belonged to the Bacillus genus and were most closely related (98–99%) to Bacillus aquimaris, Bacillus megaterium, and Bacillus pumilus. The Bioremediation Potential of Hydrocarbonoclastic Bacteria Isolated From a Mangrove Contaminated by Petroleum Hydrocarbons on the Cilacap Coast, Indonesia

Pesanggrahan River has important role and function to support human life and ecosystem existing in river area. Daily human activities that utilize river water and then dispose the sewage/waste into Pesanggrahan River can decrease the air quality. This research aims to analyzed the water quality condition of Pesanggrahan River based on physical and chemical water river factors. The analysis was conducted on eight observation points along the Pesanggrahan River in DKI Jakarta Province by testing the air pollution parameters comparing it to the air quality standard of Governmental Regulation No. 82/2001 on Air Quality Management and Air Pollution Control for Class II and Jakarta Governor Regulation No. 582/1995 on the Establishment of the Allocation and Quality Standards of River Water/Raw Water Agency of Liquid Waste Quality Standard in the Special Capital Region of Jakarta for Group C. The parameters observed in this study are 18 and 6 overall physical parameters (temperature and TSS) and parameters chemical (pH, DO, BOD, and COD). Determination of water quality status using pollution index method compared with air quality standard Governmental Regulation No. 82/2001 class II and Jakarta Governor Regulation No. 582/1995 Group C. The air quality condition of Pesanggrahan River from upstream to downstream at eight points of observation has generally decreased quality according to parameters of TSS, DO, BOD and COD which were not fulfill the quality standard. Based on the status of water quality status of Pesanggrahan River from upstream to downstream has decreased quality with mild to moderate pollutant status.
