In this research, a single-stage batch adsorber was designed for removal of brilliant green dye (BG) from aqueous solutions using activated carbon derived from date pits (ADPC) based on the Freundlich isotherm which was the best-fitted isotherm model. Experimental work was carried out within the range of 10–50 ppm initial dye concentration to determine the optimum operating conditions which were 55 min contact time, 0.06 g adsorbent mass, 25 °C, and pH = 8. Process kinetics was best-fitted with the pseudo-second order model, which revealed that the intra-particle diffusion stage is the rate-controlling stage for the process. The process efficiency was assessed by infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning microscopy (SEM), X-ray spectroscopy (EDXS), and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) where the latter showed that the specific surface area of the adsorbent is 311.38 m2 g−1, which gives a favorable maximum monolayer adsorption capacity (77.8 mg g−1). The thermodynamic study proved that BG adsorption on ADPC was physiosorptive (ΔG = −5.86 kJ mol−1) and spontaneous at low temperature (ΔH = −17.7 kJ mol−1, ΔS = −0.04 kJ mol−1 K−1).

In the present study, magnetite nanoparticles (Fe3O4NPs) synthesized using Thunbergia grandiflora leaf extract as a reducing agent were doped with hydroxyapatite sourced from waste bivalve clamshells to produce hydroxyapatite/magnetite nanocomposite (HA/Fe3O4NPs). The magnetic nanocomposite was examined using several characterization techniques. The results of XRD and FESEM, analysis showed HA/Fe3O4NPs have a crystalline phase and irregular spherical particles respectively. EDAX and FTIR confirmed the presence of specific elements and functional groups of both iron oxide and hydroxyapatite nanoparticles respectively. The surface area and superparamagnetic property of the composite were determined by BET and VSM analysis. Central Composite Design (CCD) was used to optimize the adsorption process to remove of AB113 from aqueous solutions. The optimal adsorption efficiency was found out to be 94.38% at pH 8, AB113 dye concentration 54 ppm, HA/Fe3O4NPs dose 84 mg, and an agitation speed of 174 rpm. The monolayer Langmuir isotherm was the best model with a sorption capacity of 109.98 mg/g which was higher than the reported values. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model displayed a good fit with an R2 = 0.99. Thermodynamic parameters were assessed which confirmed the exothermic adsorption process. Therefore, the synthesized magnetic nanocomposite can be employed as a novel nanoadsorbent for the removal of anionic dyes from waste effluents.

In this research, brilliant green dye (BG) has been removed from synthetic wastewater using activated carbon derived from guava seeds (AGSC) which was collected as a waste product from factories producing juice concentrates. A single-stage batch adsorber was designed for adsorption of BG by AGSC based on some experimental parameters such as contact time (5–40 min), adsorbent mass (0.01–0.08 g), temperature (25°C–95°C), pH (3–10), and initial dye concentration (10–100 ppm). The maximum adsorption capacity of AGSC was found to be 80.5 mg/g using the Langmuir isotherm model which is the best-fitted model for the process. The experimental data were fitted well with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The changes in functional groups, surface morphology, and chemical composition of AGSC before and after adsorption were identified by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscope, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, respectively. The specific surface area of AGSC was measured to be 605.1 m2/g using Brunauer– Emmett–Teller analysis. Pore volume and pore diameter were found to be 0.57 cm3/g and 3.78 nm, respectively. The thermodynamic study proved that adsorption of BG on AGSC was physiosorptive (ΔG = –7.7 kJ/mol) and spontaneous at high temperature (ΔH = 13.4 kJ/mol, ΔS = 0.07 kJ/mol K).
