I first read Davidson 30 years ago: at that time it was already in its 5th edition. A brief comparison shows that it then contained about 440,000 words in 1,100 pages: the current edition has compressed 625,000 words into 800 pages. I think I bought it as a student because it was cheap: but also because it seemed to be comprehensive and straightforward, and I have used it as a basis for my medical knowledge ever since. So I miss some of the old pictures of the acute skin rashes such as scarlet fever: in fact infectious disease has been transferred to the back and genetic factors take the first chapters. But careful linguistic comparison will still uncover the old phrases which some of us know by heart-there are minor changes such as 'alarming reactions to intravenous iron are uncommon, but have occasionally been noted', which becomes 'alarming systemic anaphyllactic reactions can occur'. Sir Stanley Davidson made 'no attempt to describe every rare disease or syndrome, but devoted most of the space available to those disorders most commonly encountered in practice'. I have grown up with successive editions, and have gradually come to appreciate the problems of the authors in the compression of knowledge. Having got to know many of them personally as real people rather than as names I can still recommend the book. It is the essential starting point for the study of internal medicine and for many doctors will remain their base reference work. The present editors have kept up-to-date and been prepared to prune the dead wood. There are many competitors in the market, and the publishers must take care with layout and illustration, although Davidson is still the best value for money. I will continue to recommend it to my clinical students: they will need to read it and know it to pass final MB. Postgraduates will need to remember the facts, but also to be able to place them in a broader perspective. The older consultant will still happily read it, and to get to know the authors themselves is really to complete your medical education. Dr John Macleod and his team have successfully kept alive the primary objective 'to provide a rational and easily comprehensible basis for the practice of medicine'. The book is economical in price and compact in size, but still contains the essential truths for the practice of good medicine.

Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in Pakistan are consistently witnessing an increased level of conflicts among employees. This increase impacts significantly the culture of the institutions. Furthermore, literature has indicated the importance of organizational culture in reshaping employees’ work practices and empowerment, specifically, in relation to the three types of conflicts such as task, process and relationship. However, the relationship of each conflict type with employees’ performance is unclear and there have been limited studies to identify antecedents of the conflicts in organizations. Thus, the objectives of this study are to examine the interrelationship of organizational culture, employee empowerment and employee conflict, and its impact on employee performance with moderating role of conflict management. A proportionate random sample of 240 academic staff from HEIs in Pakistan was respondents for the study. Structural equation modeling was used to examine the empirical relationship. Results indicated that HEIs’ culture has a negative relationship with employee conflict, and this conflict has a negative relationship with employee’s performance. The findings showed that employee empowerment mediates the relationship between organizational culture and employee conflict, whilst conflict management moderates the relationship of employee conflict and employee performance. Besides, the study also found that relationship conflict has a negative relationship with employee performance while task conflict has a positive relationship. However, the study did not find any evidence of a relationship between process conflict and employee performance. The results of the current study are helpful for HEIs’ management to develop strategies to reduce relationship conflicts by empowering their employees.

Antecedents and precedents of employee conflict among academics of higher education institutions in Pakistan

In this paper, the influence of scattering parameters on MIMO system capacity are discussed by de- signing MIMO antennas. In principle, the capacity of MIMO system can be increased by installing a high num- ber of antennas both at the transmitter and receiver. However, scattering parameters also play a vital role in the capacity of MIMO system. This behavior of capacity is observed in case of partially and fully correlated environment in the presence of scattering parameters. MIMO to explain in detail the effect of scattering parameters on the capacity of MIMO in correlated environment. We focused our analysis of capacity for partially and fully correlation situation. The capacity of MIMO based antenna systems givesa reasonable increase in capacity by installing a high number of antennas at the transmitter and receiver side. However, this method introduces not only signal correlation (7), but envelope correlation as well (8). Reflection and transmission coefficient of scat- tering parameters are attained by designing microstrip patch antenna. The desired results to analyze the antenna performance are acquired by using a probe feed mechanism in patch antenna design. The plots of MIMO for two transmit and receive antenna are examined. We exploited scattering matrix with the help of scattering parameters of reflection and transmission using suggested design. Consequently, the effects of partially and fully correlated MIMO system on capacity by using scattering matrix are stud- ied.Comparative analysis of the percentage decrease of capacity in the presence of scattering matrix is also ob- served in Figure 5. The value against these Plots are shown in Table I. A detailed analysis proposed antenna and the expression of capacity in term of scattering parameters is presented in the next sections.

Effect of Scattering Parameters On MIMO System Capacity

Sustainable livelihoods index (SLI) is most commonly used tool to assess the livelihood assets at disaster hit area The objective of this study was to operationalize the construct of livelihood and formulate its scale by testing its psychometric properties Initially, a non-systematic narrative review of existing literature was performed and afterward a scale was developed to formulating a questionnaire on livelihood The questionnaire was distributed among 222 entrepreneurs at disaster hit areas at Sindh, Pakistan The results showed that the construct of livelihood is composed of five dimensions called livelihood (capitals/assets) are social, human, natural resource, financial, and physical capital; current study has included items that cover all five dimensions The psychometric analysis revealed that SLI is a reliable and valid tool; the reliability result showed that Cronbach’s alpha coefficients were in the range from 076 to 088; and validity results showed that the average variance extracted and factor loadings were also within the acceptable ranges (above 050) Study concludes that the construct of livelihood is a dynamic construct as it could be interpreted according to the geographical and socioeconomic changes Moreover, the SLI is a valid and reliable tool for the assessment of the construct of livelihood Therefore, this index can successfully be used to measure livelihood at Pakistan
