Membrane-dependent reactions in blood coagulation: role of the vitamin K-dependent enzyme complexes.
Journal ArticleDOI
Intact platelet membranes, not platelet-released microvesicles, support the procoagulant activity of adherent platelets.
TL;DR: Neither full platelet activation nor microvesicle shedding played an essential role in generating procoagulant activity in the adherent platelet system, suggesting that calpain proteolysis of platelet cytoskeletal proteins was not responsible for microvesicles shedding.
Journal ArticleDOI
The assembly of the prothrombinase complex on adherent platelets.
Nancy A. Swords,Kenneth G. Mann +1 more
TL;DR: Electron microscopy and TIRFS demonstrated that adherent platelets have the ability to support prothrombinase complex assembly, as shown by a direct energy transfer reaction between fluorescently labeled factors Va and Xa.
Journal ArticleDOI
Bone marrow accessory cells regulate human bone precursor cell development.
Peter G. Eipers,Sujata Kale,Russell S. Taichman,George G. Pipia,Nancy A. Swords,Kenneth G. Mann,Michael W. Long +6 more
TL;DR: Human bone marrow contains a population of OACs that are an obligate requirement for the early phases of bone cell development ex vivo, and feeder-layer studies demonstrate that these osteopoietic accessory cells do not require cell-cell interaction to promote bone precursor cell development but, rather, produce soluble molecules responsible for their effects.
