Journal ArticleDOI
Reaction of naphthoquinones with substituted nitromethanes. Facile synthesis and antifungal activity of naphtho[2,3- d]isoxazole-4,9-diones
Maria M. M. Santos,Natália Faria,Jim Iley,Simon J. Coles,Michael B. Hursthouse,M. Luz Martins,Rui Moreira +6 more
TL;DR: The results suggest that the naphtho[2,3-d]isoxazole-4,9-dione scaffold has the potential to be developed into novel and safe therapeutic antifungal agents.
Journal ArticleDOI
Molecular identification, typing and traceability of cyanobacteria from freshwater reservoirs.
Elisabete Valério,Elisabete Valério,Lélia Chambel,Sérgio Paulino,Natália Faria,Paulo Pereira,Rogério Tenreiro +6 more
TL;DR: A highly congruent association was observed between STTR- and LTRR-based clusters and taxonomic affiliation, revealing the usefulness of such PCR fingerprinting profiles for the identification of cyanobacteria.
Journal ArticleDOI
Routine screening of harmful microorganisms in beach sands: Implications to public health
Raquel Sabino,Raquel Rodrigues,Inês Costa,C. Carneiro,Maria Ana Cunha,Aida Duarte,Natália Faria,Filipa Ferreira,Maria João Gargaté,Cláudia Júlio,Maria da Luz Martins,Meredith B. Nevers,Mónica Oleastro,Helena M. Solo-Gabriele,Cristina Veríssimo,Carla Viegas,Richard L. Whitman,João Brandão +17 more
TL;DR: The expert group at the "Microareias 2012" workshop recommends that beach sand should be screened for a variety of pathogens harmful to human health, and sand monitoring should be initiated alongside regular water monitoring, and sampling and analysis protocols should be standardized to allow proper comparisons among beach locations.
Journal ArticleDOI
Multiplex PCR for detection of microcystins-producing cyanobacteria from freshwater samples.
TL;DR: A PCR‐based method of gene‐directed multiplex PCR to rapidly identify microcystins producing cyanobacteria, regardless of their taxa, that could be applied in routine freshwater monitoring is developed.
Journal ArticleDOI
Cyanobacterial blooms in natural waters in southern Portugal: a water management perspective
Helena M. Galvão,Margarida P. Reis,Elisabete Valério,Rita B. Domingues,Cristina Costa,Dulce Lourenço,Sílvia Condinho,Rute Miguel,Ana B. Barbosa,Conceição Gago,Natália Faria,Sérgio Paulino,Paulo Pereira +12 more
TL;DR: The first study monitored impacts of the large Alqueva dam on the Guadiana estuary since 1996, revealing changes in sediment load, nutrient regime and phytoplankton succession as mentioned in this paper.
