Zooplankton and ichthyoplankton assemblages were studied from January 2003 to June 2004 in a temperate shallow estuary (Mondego estuary, Portugal). Monthly sampling was performed at five stations at high and low tides, with subsurface tows with 335 and 500 μm mesh Bongo nets. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed a significant effect (P < 0.05) of the mesh size of the net on the abundance of main zooplankton groups. On average, the abundance of the 500 μm taxocenosis was 67 and 102 times lower than the 335 μm taxocenosis at high and low tides respectively, especially in the south arm. More than 80 species were identified in the zooplankton samples. The upper reaches of northern arm are dominated by freshwater crustacean mesozooplankton like Acanthocyclops robustus and Diaptomus spp. and the cladocerans Daphnia, Ceriodaphnia and Bosmina, often being codominant. In the southern arm, the resident estuarine copepod Acartia tonsa was dominant, eventually being the most abundant taxon. Marine reaches of estuary are usually dominated by the marine calanoid copepods Acartia clausi and Temora longicornis and the siphonophores Muggiaea atlantica. Concerning the ichthyoplankton, this was dominated by the larvae of estuarine resident species, mainly Pomatoschistus sp., and eggs of Engraulis encrasicolus. The abundance of Pomatoschistus sp. larvae was positively correlated with water temperature. Statistical analysis (canonical correspondence analysis) used to determine the spatiotemporal structure of the zooplankton assemblages and its correlation with environmental variables showed that salinity and temperature were the main factors influencing the distribution of zooplankton. The results obtained also showed that abundance was strongly influenced by the hydrological circulation pattern and direct or indirect human impacts that occur in each arm of the estuary.

Zooplankton and ichthyoplankton communities in a temperate estuary: spatial and temporal patterns

1 Salinity is a serious threat to freshwater ecosystems, particularly those near coastal areas. An increase in salinity produces drastic changes in community structure of freshwaters, sometimes in an irreversible fashion. Thus, freshwater species must cope with salinity stress in a manner proportional to their degree of tolerance. Bearing this in mind, we studied the acute and chronic effects of different salinity concentrations in two species of cladocerans: Daphnia magna Straus, a standard test organism, and Daphnia longispina O. F. Muller, an autochthonous species. Salinity experiments were based on successive dilutions of a stock solution of NaCl in a synthetic medium. The results showed that D. magna is more tolerant than D. longispina, both in acute (EC50 5.9 and 2.9 g/L, respectively) and chronic (EC50 5.0 and 2.2 g/L, correspondingly) exposures. In the chronic exposure, salinity caused a significant reduction in fecundity and a developmental delay (increase in age at first reproduction), as well as a decrease in the growth rate of daphnids. However, these effects were mainly observed at salinity concentrations where morta- lity occurred.

Salinity effects on survival and life history of two freshwater cladocerans (Daphnia magna and Daphnia longispina)

[1] A two-dimensional, nested grid, hydrodynamic, and reactive-transport model of the macrotidal Scheldt estuary (B/NL) and its tributaries has been developed to identify the driving forces controlling the temporal and spatial dynamics of primary production during a summer diatom bloom. The hydrodynamic model indicates that energy dissipation reaches its maximum 90 km upstream from the mouth, closely followed by a minimum farther upstream. Suspended particulate matter (SPM) dynamics is simulated to provide the transient light conditions in the water column. Results show that the spatial distribution of SPM mirrors closely the profile of energy dissipation. The temporal SPM dynamics is highly sensitive to fluctuations in river discharge, whose influence decreases downstream. Peaks in SPM are triggered by high discharges and can be recorded as far as 50 km seaward of the upstream model boundary. Results from the phytoplankton model demonstrate the fast response of diatom growth to changes in the physical environment, especially those due to daily variations in river discharge which continuously modify the SPM concentrations and residence times. Episodes of persistent low flow conditions lead to a progressive depletion of dissolved silica. Simulated diatom growth becomes increasingly controlled by silica availability, until primary production collapses. The spatiotemporal evolution of primary production is explored over the entire domain of forcing conditions. The distribution of the daily maximum of net primary production and its location reveal that four different system states can be identified in the forcing planes. The transition from one state to the other characterizes the diatom growth response in the estuary.

Diatom growth response to physical forcing in a macrotidal estuary: Coupling hydrodynamics, sediment transport, and biogeochemistry

We examined the carbon sources used by bacteria and mesozooplankton in the Scheldt River and estuary (Belgium, The Netherlands) using a combined stable isotope and fatty acid composition approach. Water samples were collected monthly at six stations during 1 yr and analyzed for 13C of dissolved inorganic carbon, dissolved organic carbon (DOC), and particulate organic carbon (POC). Mesozooplankton was determined up to family, genus, or species level and analyzed for 13C and fatty acid content. Suspended particles were analyzed for phospholipid fatty acids and their 13C contents to estimate isotope ratios of phytoplankton groups and heterotrophic bacteria. The carbon isotope signatures of DOC, POC, and bacterial biomass were similar and significantly enriched relative to those of diatoms and green algae, pointing to allochthonous subsidies as an important carbon source for bacteria. The contribution of algae to zooplankton diets as estimated from isotope ratios and fatty acid profiles averaged 41% and 75% respectively, and did not differ significantly among stations, taxa, or age categories. Mesozooplankton relies primarily on grazing on phytoplankton and direct consumption of particulate organic matter. Mesozooplankton appears to receive little of its carbon from DOC via bacteria.

Autochthonous and allochthonous contributions to mesozooplankton diet in a tidal river and estuary: Integrating carbon isotope and fatty acid constraints

As a consequence of climate change, flood and drought events are increasing in frequency throughout the world. Nevertheless, knowledge of the effects on zooplankton estuarine communities is still scarce. The present study aimed to examine zooplankton ecology over two contrasting environmental conditions: regular years and extreme dry years, in a shallow temperate southern European estuary, the Mondego Estuary (Portugal). Monthly samples were carried out during three consecutive years: 2003 characterized as a regular temperate year concerning precipitation and river flow, and an extremely dry period during 2004–2005. The spatial and temporal structure of the biological data was evaluated by a three-mode principal component analysis (PCA), which allowed us to distinguish three distinct ecological areas based on their biological composition and their relationship with hydrologic parameters. The severe drought in 2004–2005 was responsible for spatial shifts in the estuary regarding zooplankton community and interannual variability, with an increase in abundance and diversity during the period of low freshwater flow. This freshwater flow regime influenced the composition of the zooplankton community at the most upstream section of Mondego estuary (zone 3), with a replacement of the freshwater community by one predominantly dominated by estuarine organisms. The occurrence of such estuarine community contributed to the increase in zooplankton abundance which is ascribed to the estuarine species Acartia tonsa . The comparison with previous data obtained for this estuarine ecosystem, demonstrated the occurrence of a different scenario at times of high freshwater flow, being defined the existence of two sub-estuarine systems, the north and south arm, presenting the south one the highest values of abundance.

Climate variability and planktonic communities: The effect of an extreme event (severe drought) in a southern European estuary

The zooplankton fauna of the Zeeschelde estuary (Belgium) was investigated over 10 months by means of monthly sampling. Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) was used to relate the species distribution to environmental factors. The variation in the species data was significantly (P < 0.05) related to a set of 10 environmental variables (chlorinity, NH4 + , temperature, PO4-P � , DW, Chl a and Chl b, NO2-N, NO3-N and pH). The main spatial and seasonal gradients were associated with chlorinity and temperature respectively. The brackish water zone was dominated by the calanoid Eurytemora affinis in spring, succeeded by Acartia tonsa and mysid species during summer. In the freshwater transect, cyclopoids dominated, together with several cladoceran species. Thermophilic cyclopoid species (Thermocyclops oithonoides, Th. crassus and Mesocyclops leuckarti) occurred during periods of maximal temperature. The cyclopoids Acanthocyclops robustus, Paracyclops poppei and Cyclops vicinus, the cladocerans Daphnia longispina, Chydorus sphaericus and Bosmina longirostris together with the numerically dominant rotifers, oligochaetes, nematodes and juvenile copepods seemed little affected by environmental gradients.
