Ultra Wideband Signals and Systems in Communication Engineering

Resonance conditions for a substrate-superstrate printed antenna geometry which allow for large antenna gain are presented. Asymptotic formulas for gain, beamwidth, and bandwidth are given, and the bandwidth limitation of the method is discussed. The method is extended to produce narrow patterns about the horizon, and directive patterns at two different angles.

Gain enhancement methods for printed circuit antennas

Recent advances in photonic integration have propelled microwave photonic technologies to new heights. The ability to interface hybrid material platforms to enhance light–matter interactions has led to the development of ultra-small and high-bandwidth electro-optic modulators, low-noise frequency synthesizers and chip signal processors with orders-of-magnitude enhanced spectral resolution. On the other hand, the maturity of high-volume semiconductor processing has finally enabled the complete integration of light sources, modulators and detectors in a single microwave photonic processor chip and has ushered the creation of a complex signal processor with multifunctionality and reconfigurability similar to electronic devices. Here, we review these recent advances and discuss the impact of these new frontiers for short- and long-term applications in communications and information processing. We also take a look at the future perspectives at the intersection of integrated microwave photonics and other fields including quantum and neuromorphic photonics. This Review discusses recent advances of microwave photonic technologies and their applications in communications and information processing, as well as their potential implementations in quantum and neuromorphic photonics.

Integrated microwave photonics

A new class of planar optics has emerged using subwavelength gratings with a large refractive index contrast, herein referred to as high-contrast gratings (HCGs). This seemingly simple structure lends itself to extraordinary properties, which can be designed top-down based on intuitive guidelines. The HCG is a single layer of high-index material that can be as thin as 15% of one wavelength. It can be designed to reflect or transmit nearly completely and with specific optical phase over a broad spectral range and/or various incident beam angles. We present a simple theory providing an intuitive phase selection rule to explain the extraordinary features. Our analytical results agree well not only with numerical simulations but also experimental data. The HCG has made easy fabrication of surface-normal optical devices possible, including vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs), tunable VCSELs, and tunable filters. HCGs can be designed to result in high-quality-factor (Q) resonators with surface-normal output, which is promising for wafer-scale lasers and optical sensors. Spatially chirped HCGs are shown to be excellent focusing reflectors and lenses with very high numerical apertures. This field has seen rapid advances in experimental demonstrations and theoretical results. We provide an overview of the underlying new physics and the latest results of devices.

High-contrast gratings for integrated optoelectronics

A vertical-cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) was invented 30 years ago. A lot of unique features can be expected, such as low-power consumption, wafer-level testing, small packaging capability, and so on. The market of VCSELs has been growing up rapidly in recent years, and they are now key devices in local area networks using multimode optical fibers. Also, long wavelength VCSELs are currently attracting much interest for use in single-mode fiber metropolitan area and wide area network applications. In addition, a VCSEL-based disruptive technology enables various consumer applications such as a laser mouse and laser printers. In this paper, the recent advance of VCSEL photonics will be reviewed, which include the wavelength extension of single-mode VCSELs and their wavelength integration/control. Also, this paper explores the potential and challenges for new functions of VCSELs toward optical signal processing

Recent Advances of VCSEL Photonics

The design and fabrication of a compact and low-cost 4×25-Gb/s transmitter optical sub-assembly (TOSA) and receiver optical sub-assembly (ROSA) using a hybrid integrated technique are reported. TOSA and ROSA are developed without thermoelectric cooler for coarse wavelength division multiplexing applications. Physical dimension of the packaged optical subassembly is limited to 11.5 mm×5.4 mm×5.4 mm. The design of TOSA and ROSA is employed using a silica-based arrayed waveguide grating chip to select the specific channel wavelength at O-band. In TOSA, the wavelength of four 1.3-µm discrete directly modulated laser chips is well controlled based on the reconstruction equivalent chirp technique. In the back-to-back transmission test, bit error rates for all lanes of cascade of the TOSA and ROSA are small. A clear opening eye diagram is obtained.

1.3-µm 4×25-Gb/s hybrid integrated TOSA and ROSA

We present a monolithically integrated three-section all-active AlGaInAs/InP tunable distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) ridge waveguide laser diode that uses thermal tuning mechanism and mode-hopping tuning principle to achieve wide-range wavelength tuning. It is similar to the traditional three-section DBR laser structure, including a gain section, a phase section, and a DBR grating section. The difference is that the phase section and the DBR section incorporate the same active quantum well structure as the gain section. In this case, weak effective refractive index changes of the three active sections affected by the current injection will occur since the carrier density is clamped by the threshold gain condition of the DBR laser diode. Despite this limitation, a noncontinuous tuning up to ∼30 nm (1564–1594 nm) can be observed using only current injection at a constant temperature of 25 °C. Significant thermal effects occurred during the tuning process. In addition, a discontinuity is introduced in the tuning because it does not contain a passive region for phase adjustment. However, the device still provides a stable single longitudinal mode output with nine channels, a wavelength spacing of about 4 nm, and a side mode suppression ratio (SMSR) of more than 30 dB. Furthermore, the DBR laser diode can be easily fabricated utilizing the conventional distributed feedback laser diode fabrication process without secondary epitaxy and heater metal. The all-active DBR laser diode will be expected to be applied in the coarse wavelength division multiplexing (CWDM) systems with the advantage of low cost.

Monolithically Integrated Tunable Three- Section All-Active DBR Laser Diodes With 30 nm Tuning Range

Dissipative solitons rely on the double balance between nonlinearity and dispersion as well as gain and loss have attracted a lot of attention in optics, since it gives rise to ultrashort pulses and broadband frequency combs with good stability and smooth spectral envelopes. Here we observe a novel dissipative solitons in microwave photonics that gives rise to wideband tunable frequency hopping microwave signals with fast frequency switching speed. The dissipative microwave photonic solitions are achieved through the double balance between nonlinear gain saturation and linear filtering as well as gain and loss in a microwave photonic resonant cavity. The generation of dissipative solitons with different pulse width, repletion rate and number of solitons per round-trip time are observed, together with the corresponding wideband tunable frequency hopping microwave signals. This work opens new avenues for signal generation, processing and control based on the principle of solitons in microwave photonics, and has great potential in many applications such as modern radars, electronic warfare systems, and telecommunications.

Discovery of dissipative microwave photonic solitons

The process where a laser and a Si waveguide were coupled was simulated by MATLAB. In order to obtain the coupling efficiency accurately and quickly, an improved finite-difference beam-propagation method(FD-BPM) and the simple transparent boundary condition(STBC) were selected. Several spot-size convertors (SSCs) of different structure with tapered Si waveguide, square SiON waveguide and SiO 2 layer were designed, simulated and analyzed. On the basis of the results, the effects of the structure of the tapered Si, the shape of the SiON waveguide and the overall SSC length on the coupling efficiency were analyzed. On the other hand, the influence of the refractive index of the SiON waveguide on the coupling efficiency was discussed. The optimum refractive index range with the best coupling efficiency was obtained. They had an instructive significance for the design of the SSC.

Design for mode field coupling of active and passive waveguide

We propose and demonstrate a microwave frequency identification system based on frequency-to-time mapping (FTTM) and cross-correlation. The unknown microwave signals and the bidirectional chirped microwave probe signal are mixed by using a dual-drive Mach-Zehnder modulator. The mixing products are equivalently selected by a dispersion induced photonic filter and converted into electrical pulses in time domain. The unknown frequency is measured by calculating the time interval of the pulses. Moreover, a scheme based on cross-correlation is proposed to eliminate the noise interference for the pulse position acquisition. Experimentally, single and multiple frequency identification from 2-14 GHz is successfully demonstrated, and the measured frequency errors are less than ±3 MHz.
