I have developed "tennis elbow" from lugging this book around the past four weeks, but it is worth the pain, the effort, and the aspirin. It is also worth the (relatively speaking) bargain price. Including appendixes, this book contains 894 pages of text. The entire panorama of the neural sciences is surveyed and examined, and it is comprehensive in its scope, from genomes to social behaviors. The editors explicitly state that the book is designed as "an introductory text for students of biology, behavior, and medicine," but it is hard to imagine any audience, interested in any fragment of neuroscience at any level of sophistication, that would not enjoy this book. Preface Through many centuries physics has been one of the most fruitful sources of inspiration for mathematics. As a consequence, mathematics has become an economic language providing a few basic principles which allow to explain a large variety of physical phenomena. Many of them are described in terms of partial diierential equations (PDEs). In recent years, however, mathematics also has been stimulated by other novel elds such as image processing. Goals like image segmentation, multiscale image representation, or image restoration cause a lot of challenging mathematical questions. Nevertheless, these problems frequently have been tackled with a pool of heuristical recipes. Since the treatment of digital images requires very much computing power, these methods had to be fairly simple. With the tremendous advances in computer technology in the last decade, it has become possible to apply more sophisticated techniques such as PDE-based methods which have been inspired by physical processes. Among these techniques, parabolic PDEs have found a lot of attention for smoothing and restoration purposes, see e.g. 113]. To restore images these equations frequently arise from gradient descent methods applied to variational problems. Image smoothing by parabolic PDEs is closely related to the scale-space concept where one embeds the original image into a family of subsequently simpler , more global representations of it. This idea plays a fundamental role for extracting semantically important information. The pioneering work of Alvarez, Guichard, Lions and Morel 11] has demonstrated that all scale-spaces fulllling a few fairly natural axioms are governed by parabolic PDEs with the original image as initial condition. Within this framework, two classes can be justiied in a rigorous way as scale-spaces: the linear diiusion equation with constant dif-fusivity and nonlinear so-called morphological PDEs. All these methods satisfy a monotony axiom as smoothing requirement which states that, if one image is brighter than another, then this order is preserved during the entire scale-space evolution. An interesting class of parabolic equations which pursue both scale-space and restoration intentions is given by nonlinear diiusion lters. Methods of this type have been proposed for the rst time by Perona and Malik in 1987 190]. Object detection and segmentation can be facilitated by the availability of a reference object. However, accounting for possible transformations between the different object views, as part of the segmentation process, remains a challenge. Recent works address this problem by using comprehensive training data. Other approaches are applicable only to limited object classes or can only accommodate similarity transformations. We suggest a novel variational approach to prior-based segmentation, which accounts for planar projective transformation, using a single reference object. The prior shape is registered concurrently with the segmentation process, without point correspondence. The algorithm detects the object of interest and correctly extracts its boundaries. The homography between the two object views is accurately recovered as well. Extending the Chan-Vese level set framework, we propose a region-based segmentation functional that includes explicit representation of the projective homography between the prior shape and the shape to segment. The formulation is derived from two-view geometry. Segmentation of a variety of objects is demonstrated and the recovered transformation is verified.

Prior-based segmentation by projective registration and level sets

We present a novel variational approach for simultaneous segmentation of two images of the same object taken from different viewpoints. Due to noise, clutter and occlusions, neither of the images contains sufficient information for correct object-background partitioning. The evolving object contour in each image provides a dynamic prior for the segmentation of the other object view. We call this process mutual segmentation. The foundation of the proposed method is a unified level-set framework for region and edge based segmentation, associated with a shape similarity term. The suggested shape term incorporates the semantic knowledge gained in the segmentation process of the image pair, accounting for excess or deficient parts in the estimated object shape. Transformations, including planar projectivities, between the object views are accommodated by a registration process held concurrently with the segmentation. The proposed segmentation algorithm is demonstrated on a variety of image pairs. The homography between each of the image pairs is estimated and its accuracy is evaluated.

Shape-Based Mutual Segmentation

Natural objects can be subject to various transformations yet still preserve properties that we refer to as invariants. Here, we use definitions of affine invariant arclength for surfaces in R^3 in order to extend the set of existing non-rigid shape analysis tools. In fact, we show that by re-defining the surface metric as its equi-affine version, the surface with its modified metric tensor can be treated as a canonical Euclidean object on which most classical Euclidean processing and analysis tools can be applied. The new definition of a metric is used to extend the fast marching method technique for computing geodesic distances on surfaces, where now, the distances are defined with respect to an affine invariant arclength. Applications of the proposed framework demonstrate its invariance, efficiency, and accuracy in shape analysis.

Affine-invariant geodesic geometry of deformable 3D shapes

We introduce a short time kernel for the Beltrami image enhancing flow. The flow is implemented by 'convolving' the image with a space dependent kernel in a similar fashion to the implementation of the heat equation by a convolution with a gaussian kernel. The expression for the kernel shows, yet again, the connection between the Beltrami flow and the Bilateral filter. The kernel is calculated by measuring distances on the image manifold by an efficient variation of the fast marching method. The kernel, thus obtained, can be used for arbitrary large time steps in order to produce adaptive smoothing and/or a new scale-space. We apply it to gray scale and color images to demonstrate its flow like behavior.
